Fifth and last in Atlas's "Archive Documents of the Avant-garde," this is the first about a composer, though it emphasizes Satie's prose writings and pen-and-ink drawings. Musical examples are included only to illustrate Satie's distinctive musical autograph or the placement of whimsical performance directions, such as his command to a pianist to "put yourself in the shade." Satie so enjoyed playing with words and being "original" that translations of his writings are a bit dangerous, but for any English-only reader interested in Satie's iconoclastic, inventive spirit, this well-organized collection of much nonsense and some sincerity?including articles about Stravinsky and Debussy?will be welcome. Excellent, unobtrusive notes give sources and dates and explain certain elements of content. Another side of Satie

Norman Lebrecht observes that Virgil Thomson considered Satie the most original mind in modern music, and laments that he applied his gifts so inconsistently. This collection may engender the opposite conclusion, that Satie could have been a great humorist, had he not devoted so much time to musical composition. Included here are the instructions to performers that Satie forbade sharing with the audience, although, unfortunately, the individual piece to which each one applies is not specified. Several essays, notably "The Musician's Day," straddle the line between satire and surrealism. Overall, the collection adds a dimension to Satie beyond his music. Somewhat disturbing are the samples of "advertisements" that reveal an obsession with adolescent interests - castles, sorcerers, and aircraft.

"Grandly forgetting the present"

I would like to relate to you all the occasion of my first encounter with "A Mammal's Notebook". I had found a copy in my university's library. On the train-ride home that same day I started to read. I found Satie's words and satirical sense of humour so delightful that it was impossible for me to put the book away when my train ride came to an end, so my 20-minute walk home became a half hour walk-read with occcasional bursts of laughter. (I guess I looked a little strange, but one often feels compelled to do strange things when immersed in the eccentric world of Satie, who was a true maverick.) Since that time, I have spent many an hour enthralled by this book. (Luckily, I have since invested in my own copy)

Now, I may be a little obsessive, but I think many others will also enjoy A Mammal's Notebook.

What you will find includes:

Chapter 1

Decision-Making and Administrative Organization

Administration is ordinarily discussed as the art of "getting things done." Emphasis is placed upon processes and methods for insuring incisive action. Principles are set forth for securing concerted action from groups of men. In all this discussion, however, not very much attention is paid to the choice which prefaces all action -- to the determining of what is to be done rather than to the actual doing. It is with this problem -- the process of choice which leads to action -- that the present study is concerned. In this introductory chapter the problem will be posed and a survey made of the topics to be taken up in the remaining chapters.

Although any practical activity involves both "deciding" and "doing," it has not commonly been recognized that a theory of administration should be concerned with the processes of decision as well as with the processes of action. This neglect perhaps stems from the notion that decision-making is confined to the formulation of over-all policy. On the contrary, the process of decision does not come to an end when the general purpose of an organization has been determined. The task of "deciding" pervades the entire administrative organization quite as much as does the task of "doing" -- indeed, it is integrally tied up with the latter. A general theory of administration must include principles of organization that will insure correct decision-making, just as it must include principles that will insure effective action.

DECISION-MAKING AND THE EXECUTION OF DECISIONS

It is clear that the actual physical task of carrying out an organization's objectives falls to the persons at the lowest level of the administrative hierarchy. The automobile, as a physical object, is built not by the engineer or the executive, but by the mechanic on the assembly line. The fire is extinguished, not by the fire chief or the captain, but by the team of firemen who play a hose on the blaze.

It is equally clear that the persons above this lowest or operative level in the administrative hierarchy are not mere surplus baggage, and that they too must have an essential role to play in the accomplishment of the agency's objectives. Even though, as far as physical cause and effect are concerned, it is the machine gunner and not the major who fights battles, the major is likely to have a greater influence upon the outcome of a battle than any single machine gunner.

How, then, do the administrative and supervisory staff of an organization affect that organization's work? The nonoperative staff of an administrative organization participate in the accomplishment of the objectives of that organization to the extent that they influence the decisions of the operatives -- the persons at the lowest level of the administrative hierarchy. The major can influence the battle to the extent that his head is able to direct the machine gunner's hand. By deploying his forces in the battle area and assigning specific tasks to subordinate units he determines for the machine gunner where he will take his stand and what his objective will be. In very small organizations the influence of all supervisory employees upon the operative employees may be direct, but in units of any size there are interposed between the top supervisors and the operative employees several levels of intermediate supervisors who are themselves subject to influences from above, and who transmit, elaborate, and modify these influences before they reach the operatives.

If this is a correct description of the administrative process, then the construction of an efficient administrative organization is a problem in social psychology. It is a task of setting up an operative staff and superimposing on that staff a supervisory staff capable of influencing the operative group toward a pattern of coordinated and effective behavior. The term "influencing" rather than "directing" is used here, for direction -- that is, the use of administrative authority -- is only one of several ways in which the administrative staff may affect the decisions of the operative staff; and, consequently, the construction of an administrative organization involves more than a mere assignment of functions and allocation of authority.

In the study of organization, the operative employee must be at the focus of attention, for the success of the structure will be judged by his performance within it. Insight into the structure and function of an organization can best be gained by analyzing the manner in which the decisions and behavior of such employees are influenced within and by the organization.

CHOICE AND BEHAVIOR

All behavior involves conscious or unconscious selection of particular actions out of all those which are physically possible to the actor and to those persons over whom he exercises influence and authority. The term "selection" is used here without any implication of a conscious or deliberate process. It refers simply to the fact that, if the individual follows one particular course of action, there are other courses of action that he thereby forgoes. In many cases the selection process consists simply in an established reflex action -- a typist hits a particular key with a finger because a reflex has been established between a letter on a printed page and this particular key. Here the action is, in some sense at least, rational (i.e. goal-oriented), yet no element of consciousness or deliberation is involved.

In other cases the selection is itself the product of a complex chain of activities called "planning" or "design" activities. An engineer, for example, may decide upon the basis of extensive analysis that a particular bridge should be of cantilever design. His design, further implemented by detailed plans for the structure, will lead to a whole chain of behaviors by the individuals constructing the bridge.

In this volume many examples will be given of all varieties of selection process. All these examples have in common the following characteristics: At any moment there are a multitude of alternative (physically) possible actions, any one of which a given individual may undertake; by some process these numerous alternatives are narrowed down to that one which is in fact acted out. The words "choice" and "decision" will be used interchangeably in this study to refer to this process. Since these terms as ordinarily used carry connotations of self-conscious, deliberate, rational selection, it should be emphasized that as used here they include any process of selection, regardless of whether the above elements are present to any degree.

VALUE AND FACT IN DECISION

A great deal of behavior, and particularly the behavior of individuals within administrative organizations, is purposive -- oriented toward goals or objectives. This purposiveness brings about an integration in the pattern of behavior, in the absence of which administration would be meaningless; for, if administration consists in "getting things done" by groups of people, purpose provides a principal criterion in determining what things are to be done.

The minute decisions that govern specific actions are inevitably instances of the application of broader decisions relative to purpose and to method. The walker contracts his leg muscles in order to take a step; he takes a step in order to proceed toward his destination; he is going to the destination, a mail box, in order to mail a letter; he is sending a letter in order to transmit certain information to another person, and so forth. Each decision involves the selection of a goal, and a behavior relevant to it; this goal may in turn be mediate to a somewhat more distant goal; and so on, until a relatively final aim is reached. In so far as decisions lead toward the selection of final goals, they will be called "value judgments"; so far as they involve the implementation of such goals they will be called "factual judgments."

Unfortunately, problems do not come to the administrator carefully wrapped in bundles with the value elements and the factual elements neatly sorted. For one thing, goals or final objectives of governmental organization and activity are usually formulated in very general and ambiguous terms -- "justice," "the general welfare," or "liberty." Then, too, the objectives as defined may be merely intermediate to the attainment of more final aims. For example, in certain spheres of action, the behavior of men is generally oriented around the "economic motive." Yet, for most men, economic gain is not usually an end in itself, but a means for attaining more final ends: security, comfort, and prestige.

Finally, the value and factual elements may be combined, in some cases, in a single objective. The apprehension of criminals is commonly set up as an objective of a municipal police department. To a certain extent this objective is conceived as an end in itself, that is, as aimed toward the apprehension and punishment of offenders against the law; but from another point of view apprehension is considered a means for protecting citizens, for rehabilitating offenders, and for discouraging potential offenders.

The Hierarchy of Decisions. The concept of purposiveness involves a notion of a hierarchy of decisions -- each step downward in the hierarchy consisting in an implementation of the goals set forth in the step immediately above. Behavior is purposive in so far as it is guided by general goals or objectives; it is rational in so far as it selects alternatives which are conducive to the achievement of the previously selected goals.

It should not be inferred that this hierarchy or pyramid of goals is perfectly organized or integrated in any actual behavior. A governmental agency, for instance, may be directed simultaneously toward several distinct objectives: a recreation department may seek to improve the health of children, to provide them with good uses for their leisure time, and to prevent juvenile delinquency, as well as to achieve similar goals for the adults in the community.

A "Daily Affirmation" book from a Rock God! This set of 'affirmations" I can handle

The company I work for is all about self help books and daily affirmations! I get inspirational books mailed to me before every meeting (which I do not read) and at every training class, folks are buried in some random book, other making notes or underlining chapters in order to "better themselves"!! Personally , though I like fitness, and health books, daily motivational books are not my thing - I would rather live life than read about how to 'maybe' live it better !

But then there is this - daily affirmations from Keith Richards!! Talk about a man who has lived -and continues to live life to the fullest! He is a Rock God!! My parents listened to the Stones, I listen to the Stones, my kids listen to the Stones! They have been more successful, over more time that any band I can think of so clearly something is going right!

This book is funny! Just a random collection of words from good old Keith himself! Just six short chapters, a timeline of Keith , and it closes with a recipe for Shepherd's Pie -apparently his favorite! It's not all new, much of it has been written somewhere else, if you have read Life you might know much of this....but here is it , concise, and all in one spot! The commandments of Keith, what would he do, fashion and style., his wit and wisdom! Yes, this will do - I would much rather read this wisdom than a "closing a sale" guide! You can pick it up quickly and easily, read once or again and again - it works!

Something for the night stand, the plane, the bus or the sales meeting in place of a self help book! Yes, this will do just the trick!

Well Done, Ms. West. Bravo.

Really so much better done that it has any right or necessity to be. The author could have gotten away with putting in half the effort and it would have been a nice book to have, but she really did her research and figured out the best way to present the topic at hand, which is what we can all learn from the life of Keith Richards. I've read so much about Keith Richards and he is one of my favorite people. There's a reason why you'll will only hear great things about Richards from the crew that works on the Rolling Stones tours. He just has this basic humility and he's not afraid to admit his mistakes, and since he's been interviewed so many times and his escapes are public, he was a great subject for this book He didn't just fit the bill because he was a survivor. There 's more too it than that and Ms. West has done a great job getting to the heart of how Keith Richards has made so many close friends over the years and kept his sense of humor.

An interesting premise and a fascinating read

I am a big Keith Richards fan. I have been for more than 40 years. If you're a Stones fans, you know the pure wisdom of "Keef". Keith Richards is the human riff and when you're that in tune with your music, you're pretty much in tune with the whole world around you.

When I first bought this book (via e-copy) I thought it might be a bit of a joke, but it's not. The book, like Keith rocks. As a matter of fact, it is far more profound and telling than some "Daily Thoughts" self help book you'll every read. Jessica Pallington does a great job of walking the reader through each "Keithism" and how it relates to the world around them. It amazes me how truly profound the 'human riff' really is and yet, I always knew it in my heart. Kudos to Ms. Pallington for a job well done . .you. Keith would be proud. I loved it so much, I bought a hard copy too. ;-)

About the Author

A former gymnast, coach, and teacher, Phillip Ward has been involved in gymnastics for more than 25 years. As assistant professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ward's major scholarly interests include pedagogy, teacher education, and applied behavior analysis.

Before joining the university, Ward was coaching director of the Victorian Gymnastics Association, where he was responsible for coaching education and course development. He was also a gymnast, a coach to beginning and elite gymnasts, a teacher, and a teacher educator.

Ward earned his PhD in physical education from The Ohio State University in 1993. The author of numerous articles and six manuals on gymnastics and gymnastics instructions, he is a member of the American Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; the American Educational Research Association; and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.

Teaching Tumbling

This book was used as a reference in writing our school districts elementary tumbling unit. The skills are well illustrated and each stunt is clearly defined. For the novice teacher this manual includes lessons which are arranged into 4 parts-warm-up, assessment and review, intro of new skills and closure. For the more experienced teacher the Tumbling Priciples and Skills section offers hints for instruction and a wide variety of ideas.

Good for little kids....

I got this book thinking that it would help me with my front & back handspring, but the most advanced it got was teaching a cartwheel. It would be an excellent book though for some one younger and less experienced that is jsut starting with tumbling although, but not me.

Historical fiction at its best!

This is the story of a Polish couple, Silvana and Janusz and their son Aurek. They met and married in 1937. As both the Russians and the Germans invaded Poland in 1940 the couple is separated. He joins the military and after a long journey, typical of Poles who chose to fight on after the defeat of their country, ends up in the RAF in England. She initially raped by a German soldier, flees with their son to a live in the forests of Poland. The story opens in 1946 as the couple is reunited after their six year separation. Building on the memories of a deeply loving relationship before the war the couple tries to reestablish their family life. Each has secrets that they do not share with thevother. These secrets, the crux of the story, are slowly revealed in two separate threads. No more spoilers from me on the story!

This book is vividly written and has complexity to the plot that continues to draw you in right up until the last chapter. The long lasting effects of war on people are brilliantly portrayed in the story. In post war Britain, the couple has every advantage- an intact family, a house, a car, a good job - but the lingering effects of what happened to them during the war destroy their chances to go forward. The son has been deeply influenced by his time in the forests avoiding both Germans and Russians and living off the land. In one scene his father shows him how to collect and save birds eggs and the boy can only think of how he wants to eat the eggs contents as he did so often in the forests. He has a particularly difficult time socializing and entering into normal relationships. It was heartbreaking and at times almost too sad to bear. In the end though this story is a triumph of the human spirit over adversity.

A story of LOVE

War is cruel to all the participants whether they want to be in it it not. This story tells the horror of what was experienced by two people. No three people whose lives were forever changed. How is it that people move on after such unspeakable trauma? To survive they must! To live on is to find the smallest glimmer of light that gives hope. They will not forget but they must find forgiveness in their heart for themselves and for others. This story tells also the strength of the bonding of one's native country to it's "children," in this case the beautiful overpowering country of Poland.

A rare gem

Dr. Pong Chu has done Yoeman's work here. Unlike most applied engineering texts in which the author does a lot of hand-waving; iterating already well published knowledge, and inserting a desultory set of white papers and application notes, Professor Chu has done some serious heavy lifting in this book. Dr. Chu has basically produced the same book over a number of years using two flavors VHDL and Verilog on two FPGA platforms, Xilinx and Altera. However I say that in a good way, as this book is very clear, free of all but minor errors, and incredibly detailed with practical examples. The charts and graphs alone are a masterpieces and I'm sure they exist no where else. The amount of work Chu must have spent putting this all together in a presentable way is incredible. You could read the 1,000+ page SOPC/Qsys spec Altera generously provides but it will only serve as confusing soporific which will usually prove unhelpful unless you are after a very specific question and have the time to wade through it.

There is both practical and recondite knowledge in this tome, which will take the graduate student, or practicing engineer, on the path to success as more company's move away from the outdated 8-bit assembly programed MCU's, more suitable for toasters and dishwashers, and into the exciting world of system on a chip (SoC). This book is focused on developing an up-loadable hardware architecture produced from HDL, and the SOPC(now Qsys) GUI for the FPGA, and then using the fungible Eclipse IDE to write C code to instruct it on how to behave. The Altera and Xilinx versions both utilize their respective free tool chains. No there probably wont be a Microsemi or Lattice version, but really who cares as you got the two big boys covered (Xilinx and Altera).

This book is most suitable for:

1. Graduate Computer Engineering students with an interest in FPGA's and SoC.
2. Practicing Engineers new to SoC or the Altera/Xilinx tool flow.

This book uses the Terasic DE1 Development board for its examples. If your newish to this you may want to get the cheaper Terasic DE0 board first and go through the included tutorials that comes with that board. As an aside Terasic does a wonderful job with their Altera products, the same certainly cannot be said about the Xilinx/Digilent relationship.

As a final word Chu is sharing practical and applicable knowledge that very few university professors have. The small group of people that do know this stuff well don't normally share it, they are your principle engineers at company's like Raytheon, GE Embedded, and Samsung, or your highly compensated freelance FPGA consultants, and they have neither the time nor the inclination to help you learn, fortunately Dr. Chu does.

a course in a book

It's hard to believe this book only has two reviews. I bought it 2 years ago and read it cover to cover while performing all of the examples on my Altera DE1 board. This book is much better than any physical or online course out there. Examples are clear and easy to interpret. I only wish my instructors in college used books like this.

I wrote an SRAM controller using the examples. I modified it slightly and you can view it on Youtube. I don't want to post any links here but you can do a search for SRAM CONTROLLER. Hope this review helps.

Comprehensive and practical book on FPGA SoC and hardware-software co-design

FPGA SoC (system on a Chip) and hardware-software co-design are emerging and exciting technologies. Developing such system is quite complex, requiring knowledge from software algorithm to hardware design and everything in between. This book tries to tackle the problem and covers a wide range of topics, including hardware design via Verilog HDL (Hardware Description Language), FPGA based soft-core processor, custom I/O peripherals, hardware accelerators, bus interface, device drivers, embedded programming, and the integration of customer hardware, processor, and software.

The book is divided into 4 parts:
- Part I introduces key Verilog language constructs and digital design concepts, and systematically shows how to implement combinational circuit, sequential circuit, FSM, and FSMD (FSM with data path).
- Part II is basically a stand-alone introduction to embedded C programming within Altera Nios II processor framework. It shows how to create a Nios based system with predesigned I/O cores, develop software with Altera IDE, and construct device drivers to access IO cores.
- Part III provides an in-depth overview of Nios II bus structure and discusses the development of custom IO peripherals (i.e., IP cores). It utilizes the hardware techniques of Part I and software driver techniques of Part II to design a series of moderately complex IP cores, including a PS2 keyboard/mouse controller, a video controller with SRAM frame buffer, an audio codec controller, and an SD card controller with FAT file system.
-Part IV demonstrates how to convert a software algorithm into a hardware accelerator. Three case studies are provided: GCD, Mandelbrot set, and DDFS. Their software and hardware implementations and performance are compared.

Pros:
- The book explains complicated concepts in a concise and easy-to-understand manner. Its presentation is clear, coherent and easy-to follow.
- The book uses many relevant and practical design examples to illustrate and reinforce the key concepts. It actually makes the learning "fun."

Cons:
- The book does not cover "memory-mapped master" interface, "stream" interface, and multi-processor design.
- The books doses not discuss the techniques to do hardware-software partition (such as software profiling etc).
- The device drivers are written in C, not C++ (perhaps my personal preference).

Caveats (what the book is NOT):
- The book is not about learning Altera software. FPGA SoC is in the cutting edge of technology and the software is updated frequently. A published book is unlikely to cover the most recent version of software and should not be used as a tutorial to learn the software. I am using version 12 (version 10 used in book) and Qsys (SOPC Builder used in book). The procedures in the book generally apply although the GUI and some details change a little bit.
- The book mainly focuses on how to design your own IP cores rather than using the vendor's existing IP cores.
-While the IP cores and device drivers in this book are functional, they are just "skeletons" and are not robust. If you just want to find a core and are not interested in its internal design, it is better to search a core from the vendor library.
The author has an FAQ in his web. You should take a look to see whether the book fits your need.

In summary, I give the book 4.5 stars (half star taken off because of the missing topics in "Cons"). It is rounded to 5 since Amazon does not allow a half star.

[Comparison to the earlier book]
The author has an early book on this topic, "FPGA Prototyping By Verilog Examples: Xilinx Spartan-3 Version." While it also covers Verilog and hardware design, there are significant differences. First, Xilinx devices and prototyping boards are used. Second, and more importantly, the discussion of hardware design is in a somewhat "isolated context" (i.e., just the hardware itself). The new SOPC book is targeted at Altera devices and DE series boards. The hardware design is in the context of "embedded FPGA SoC," which is more realistic and relevant and reflects the current industrial practices. The SOPC book is also expanded significantly to include many new and emerging technologies. If you already have a Xilinx board and just want to learn Verilog, the FPGA prototyping book is fine. If you start from scratch, you should obtain an Altera DE series board and follow this book. You will be amazed by the capability and flexibility of today's FPGA technology.
