A visual journey through the history of landscape design

For thousands of years, people have altered the meaning of space by reshaping nature. As an art form, these architectural landscape creations are stamped with societal imprints unique to their environment and place in time.

Illustrated History of Landscape Design takes an optical sweep of the iconic landscapes constructed throughout the ages. Organized by century and geographic region, this highly visual reference uses hundreds of masterful pen-and-ink drawings to show how historical context and cultural connections can illuminate today's design possibilities.

This guide includes:

  • Storyboards, case studies, and visual narratives toportray spaces

  • Plan, section, and elevation drawings of key spaces

  • Summaries of design concepts, principles, and vocabularies

  • Historic and contemporary works of art that illuminate a specific era

  • Descriptions of how the landscape has been shaped over time in response to human need

Directing both students and practitioners along a visually stimulating timeline, Illustrated History of Landscape Design is a valuable educational tool as well as an endless source of inspiration.

Amazon Exclusive: Q&A with the Authors

What are some of your favorite iconic landscape spaces?
Chip: The topiary garden at Levens Hall is so unusual and surreal. It’s survived the changing styles of landscape design over the centuries and remains a testament to wackiness.
Liz: I love the choreography of space at the Villa Lante.

Why an illustrated book?
Liz: It would be hard not to rely on images to describe space. Our book contains only hand-drawings (not photographs) which further help the reader be ‘drawn’ into a space—no pun intended!
Chip: As a kid I loved the Classics Illustrated series. Seeing an artist’s interpretation of a great narrative made it very real for me.

What makes this different from other history books?
Chip: We have included so many unique graphic features—plans, sections, elevations, perspectives, axonometrics, analytical diagrams, and storyboards—that distill and synthesize important concepts.
Liz: We really tried to present a broad context for historical works of landscape architecture. We started each chapter with a timeline of world events, and concluded each chapter with summaries of design concepts, principles, vocabularies and lists of ‘neat stuff’ that are typically not part of a traditional course in landscape architectural history.

How is studying landscape history relevant to today’s designers?
Liz: Everything we do as designers relates to what’s been done before—one can evolve a trend or totally challenge tradition.
Chip: Studying the past helps a designer build a vocabulary of form, and understand the context in which one is working.

What are some examples of using historical landscape designs in today’s design challenges?
Chip: Today’s emphasis on green architecture and sustainable design is rooted in the past. Throughout history, a culture’s survival depended on understanding the delicate balance of people and nature, garden and climate.
Liz: It’s exciting to think of how people use space and understand the landscape in a digital age. The forms and design vocabularies that will capture our culture’s values in the 21st century are still evolving.

Review
"The authors have a created a visual treat sure to inspire and captivate any student of landscape design. Beautiful, abundant, precise drawings in concert with a more limited yet engaging text make this book unique. In a visual disclipine such as landscape design, such a novel approach is long overdue. This impressive work could serve as an outstanding textbook for landscape design students or as a useful reference for libraries. This significant, delightful, one-of-a kind work is sure to become a classic." (Choice, July 2010)

"…an accessible and reliable source for students and the interest general reader." (BBC Gardens Illustrated, May 2010)

A remarkable journey of design, history, ideas and imagination
By James Richards
Sullivan and Boults have produced a one-of-a-kind achievement with this remarkable volume. Though conceived as a textbook, it will have immense appeal to anyone with an intellectual curiousity about history, culture, ideas and design. It will become a collector's item for drawing afficianados, resembling more a graphic novel than a traditional history book. The narratives are insightful, going deeper than previous texts to weave storylines that set the evolution of designed landscapes into the broader context of their political, cultural and religious times. It is complemented beautifully by hundreds of imaginative drawings that illuminate the stories of iconic sites and the ideas behind them in ways photographs could never do. The result is a fascinating synthesis of words and images is at once intellectually rich, highly accessible and great fun. This book will find its way into classrooms, professional libraries and travel bags; it will inspire further study, travel, and drawing as a means of sharing ideas in both students and professionals alike. This is a real treat; I recommend it highly.

Finally - An Up-to-Date Landscape History Book
By G. L. Robinson
Illustrated History of Landscape Design is marvelous! When I heard it was coming I could hardly wait! I have taken a landscape history class once and taught landscape history and design for six years. The texts were always cumbersome and somewhat outdated or loaded with insignificant material. This book is perfect for the classroom, not only for a landscape history class but also landscape design. I love the way it shows the history comparatively with landscapes developing in all parts of the world. As well, it is great to be able to see a timeline with non-landscape historical events. The format is accessible and the illustrations are wonderful! I applaud Boults and Sullivan for their creativity and insight. There is something refreshing and exciting on each page. I look forward to sharing this book with my students!

A visual history of built landscapes
By Ron Wigginton
This is a book that visually takes you through the built world in the most graceful manner possible. If you ever wanted to finally get an accurate perspective on the sequence of events as humans learned to evolve aesthetics and engineering you should read Boults and Sullivan's, "Illustrated History of Landscape Design". The authors are especially qualified as landscape architects and educators (she concentrated on the history and text, and he masterfully illustrated - or should I say illuminated - places and sites we all thought we knew well)... together they have created a remarkably artistic book that will change the way you view constructed cultures.

Local Money: What Difference Does It Make?, by John Rogers

Local money has been used for hundreds of years and throughout the world, yet very few of us understand what it's all about. In the last few years, many more local currencies have been launched, but why? We all need money - to stay alive, to buy essential goods and services. But when jobs and money are in short supply it's largely because 97% of national money is controlled by the private banking industry. They trade, gamble and invest money where they can earn the biggest profit. And when the banks are in trouble so are ordinary people. By contrast, local currencies are owned by the community. They are designed to support local businesses, local jobs, local producers and services, local crafts and artists, community initiatives, charities, volunteers, etc. They create strong social networks and ensure that the community thrives even in a recession. By keeping the currency local, they protect it from speculators who will only invest if there is a profit to be had. This pamphlet explains the practical differences between national and local money - how local currencies work, what they can do that national money can't do, and why they are needed. If you are lucky enough to have a local currency, find out why you should join it. If you don't, you might be inspired to start one!

best lay person intro to benefits and resources for communities
By Healing Toolbox
While info on local money, community currency, can be found online and in books, much of the literature is by economists and authors more interested in abstract and technical details. John's effort is more user-friendly for the average reader or communitarian wishing to know if their community is ripe to to invest effort into local money.

The book excerpt here on Amazon, from the first chapter, paints a picture of how local money knits a community together and how people FEEL using local money.

Seems to me our most likely future, not far away, for most of us, is TWO currencies, one for local face-to-face transactions, useful for keeping wealth circulating locally. The other money we will use will be valid worldwide, or at least nationally, for purchasing things outside our local community. A two-money system is one of the very few solutions to prevent wealth from being siphoned out of local communities towards multi-national corporations and Wall Street.

Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why, by Laurence Gonzales

"Unique among survival books...stunning...enthralling. Deep Survival makes compelling, and chilling, reading."―Penelope Purdy, Denver Post

After her plane crashes, a seventeen-year-old girl spends eleven days walking through the Peruvian jungle. Against all odds, with no food, shelter, or equipment, she gets out. A better-equipped group of adult survivors of the same crash sits down and dies. What makes the difference?

Examining such stories of miraculous endurance and tragic death―how people get into trouble and how they get out again (or not)―Deep Survival takes us from the tops of snowy mountains and the depths of oceans to the workings of the brain that control our behavior. Through close analysis of case studies, Laurence Gonzales describes the "stages of survival" and reveals the essence of a survivor―truths that apply not only to surviving in the wild but also to surviving life-threatening illness, relationships, the death of a loved one, running a business during uncertain times, even war.

Fascinating for any reader, and absolutely essential for anyone who takes a hike in the woods, this book will change the way we understand ourselves and the great outdoors.

From Publishers Weekly
When confronted with a life-threatening situation, 90% of people freeze or panic, says Gonzales in this exploration of what makes the remaining 10% stay cool, focused and alive. Gonzales (The Hero's Apprentice; The Still Point), who has covered survival stories for National Geographic Explorer, Outside and Men's Journal, uncovers the biological and psychological reasons people risk their lives and why some are better at it than others. In the first part of the book, the author talks to dozens of thrill-seekers-mountain climbers, sailors, jet pilots-and they all say the same thing: danger is a great rush. "Fear can be fun," Gonzales writes. "It can make you feel more alive, because it is an integral part of saving your own life." Pinpointing why and how those 10% survive is another story. "They are the ones who can perceive their situation clearly; they can plan and take correct action," Gonzales explains. Survivors, whether they're jet pilots landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier or boatbuilders adrift on a raft in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, share certain traits: training, experience, stoicism and a capacity for their logical neocortex (the brain's thinking part) to override the primitive amygdala portion of their brains. Although there's no surefire way to become a survivor, Gonzales does share some rules for adventure gleaned from the survivors themselves: stay calm, be decisive and don't give up. Remembering these rules when crisis strikes may be tough, but Gonzales's vivid descriptions of life in the balance will stay with readers.

From Booklist
What impels people to risk their lives by climbing mountains or deep-sea diving? What confluence of forces leads to drastic accidents? Why do some people survive disasters while others perish? A renowned journalist intrigued with risk, Gonzales conducts an in-depth and engrossing inquiry into the dynamics of survival. Relating one hair-raising true story after another about wilderness adventures gone catastrophically wrong and other calamities, Gonzales draws on sources as diverse and compelling as the Stoic philosophers and neuroscience to elucidate the psychological, physiological, and spiritual strengths that enable certain individuals to avoid fatal panic and make that crucial "transition from victim to survivor." People who survive being lost or adrift at sea, for instance, pay close attention to their surroundings and respect the wild. Gonzales also notes that survivors think of others, either helping a fellow sufferer or rallying to outsmart death in order to spare loved ones anguish. The study of survival offers an illuminating portal into the human psyche, and Gonzales, knowledgeable and passionate, is a compelling and trustworthy guide. Donna Seaman

Valuable, Stoic-Centric Advice For Accident Survival, and Life Survival
By Charles
I read Laurence Gonzales’ “Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, And Why” as a counterpoint to Amanda Ripley’s “The Unthinkable.” Both are survivor books, very different in their approach, but with significant conclusions in common. Gonzales focuses more on accidents: unexpected twists that challenge people in stressful situations they chose to put themselves in, primarily wilderness and sporting recreational activities. Gonzales focuses little on true disasters, where our daily lives are suddenly interrupted by a wholly unexpected catastrophic and immediately life threatening event from which we must escape; Ripley focuses on true disasters. Gonzales focuses a lot on scientific, technical biological explanations; Ripley talks a lot about pseudo-scientific evolutionary biology. Gonzales is a more florid writer on a semi-autobiographical quest following a life of adventure; Ripley is a straightforward young writer trying to analyze what others do.

But this review is about Gonzales’ book, which aspires to “tell people [not] what to do but rather to be a search for a deeper understanding that will allow them to know what to do when the time comes.” His book tries to provide an overarching philosophy, really, for life survival, not just survival when you’re lost in the woods or hanging off a mountain. In fact, if there is a unifying theme of “Deep Survival,” other than survival itself, it is Stoicism. Quotations from Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius litter the book, and their ideas permeate every page. For example, from Epictetus: “On the occasion of every accident that befalls you, remember to turn to yourself and inquire what power you have for turning it to use.” This is because Gonzales believes, with demonstrated reason, that a Stoic approach to unexpected twists in life will maximize your chances for survival, in whatever situation you find yourself.

Gonzales ties all his stories and thoughts back to himself—back to his own growing appreciation for these principles he discovers during his life, and most of all back to his father’s experiences in World War Two and the rest of his life (he was a bomber pilot alive at the time this book was written, 2004). If you don’t like the personal angle, it may seem a bit navel-gazing. But he does a good job making himself and his family relevant, and after all, it’s his book, not merely a textbook for the wanna-be survivor.

Gonzales spends the first half of the book evaluating “How Accidents Happen.” In other words, most of what he focuses on is preventable survival problems. For him, if you stay home, there will be no survival problem. And, for the most part, if you go out into the wilderness and make the right choices, there will also be no survival problem. What Gonzales wants to know in this section is why people act in ways that create situations in which they must survive. His conclusion, shot through the book, is that it’s down to uncontrollable emotions, mostly for bad, but also for good. Quoting Remarque’s description in “All Quiet On The Western Front” of men who, having been at the front for a while, thrown themselves to the ground on sheer reflex, even before they can hear or sense a shell, Gonzales concludes “Emotion is an instinctive response aimed at self-preservation.” But that same instinctive response can also betray.

There is much talk of dopamine, brain structures, stress hormones, memory, and, in the end, “that quality which is perhaps the only one which may be said with certainty to make for success, self-control.” Our brains conspire to impel us by inciting emotions to do things that are not rational and not a good idea, but seem like a good idea to our brains. We need this type of decision making, since it is fast and effective, but it can kill us, if the emotion leads us to do something objectively stupid. Panic is only one of those emotions; pleasurable emotions are also extremely powerful. Controlling those emotions without losing their benefit is everything. And not just the control of manipulation—also the control of knowing what you don’t know. “A survivor expects the world to keep changing and keeps his senses always tuned to: What’s up? The survivor is continuously adapting.” “[T]he survivor ‘does not impose pre-existing patterns on new information, but rather allows new information to reshape [his mental models].’”

Of course, even choosing activities carefully while engaging in rigid self-control is often not enough. Accident always happen; it is the nature of systems, even simple systems. Small failures are self-correcting or at least not catastrophic, until the day they combine with other happenings to create total failure. As with a sand pile, which slides and collapses in unpredictable ways, you can tell that an accident will happen despite your best efforts, but not how or when. (It helps, of course, not to be stupid or have undesirable characteristics. Gonzales, like Ripley, casually slags fat people as unlikely to survive.) This is a commonality of systems: Gonzales notes that Clausewitz pointed out that military systems seemed simple, and therefore easy to manage, but “terrible friction . . . is everywhere in contact with chance, with consequences that are impossible to calculate.” Again, Clausewitz says a general must not “expect a level of precision in his operation that simply cannot be achieved owing to this very friction.” And trying to impose our own reality on actual reality when that friction starts to bite is disastrous.

Even if you choose carefully and have self-control, and avoid a system failure, you may still end up in a survival situation by simple failure of knowledge. If you don’t bother to inquire how the local waves differ from the waves you are familiar with, you may end up in trouble that you could have easily avoided. Gonzales does not promise that everything will be OK; he merely offers analysis and advice for maximizing the chance of avoiding problems.

Gonzales then turns to “Survival”—what to do when, for whatever reason, you’ve ended up in a survival situation. Many people “bend the map”—they try to, when lost in an unfamiliar area, rationalize how they are really in a familiar area. Don’t do that. Be as Stoic as possible. Accept your fate yet work to change it. Never follow rules given by others just because they are rules or because they are the group. Never give up. Fatigue is mostly psychological and difficult to recover from; rest proactively rather than pushing yourself. Balance risk and reward, then act decisively—be a “man of action.” Pray—even if it doesn’t work, it helps you focus and take action. (Although neither Gonzales nor Ripley emphasize it, both note that religious people are far more likely to survive.) “Plan the flight and fly the plan. But don’t fall in love with the plan.” Give yourself small goals and achieve small successes; follow a routine; create order. Focus on yourself, not on blaming others, or relying on them. And, ultimately, you may still die. “But what can be earned is a certain nobility—not in the sense of aristocratic status but in the sense of striving for quality and dignity of behavior and living.” The last is said by a wilderness firefighter of his daily job, but it can just as well be applied to a survivor in a single desperate situation.

None of what Gonzales says is all that startling. I imagine many of us would list some variations on these if asked the question, “what should one do to survive?” But Gonzales weaves these principles into a coherent whole, and links them to a range of interesting stories about real people. As with Ripley’s book, whose more cut-and-dried lessons Gonzales echoes, the reader can benefit quite a bit from this book, if you read carefully and absorb the lessons.

Many levels of meaning...
By Thomas J. Brucia
This is one of the best 20 books I've read in my life. If read on multiple levels, it is far more than about survival in "adventure sports" or combat. It's about how to handle all kinds of disasters that we all eventually face. The book is elegantly written, too. I have been a sea kayaker, scuba diver, and backpacker over the course of my life and as I read I remembered incidents and people over decades of my life. (No fatalities thank goodness, though some deserved to die). As for myself, this book has kept me from doing some insanely stupid things -- and reminded my of dumb things I've done that should have killed me. I have recommended this book to any number of friends (and I heard of it from my closest brother). I always tell them, "If you read this book and think of it as simply a series of people making mistakes, you haven't 'gotten it'. Look underneath and find the deeper things and you will find them."

Others will run about like headless chickens
By Curt Seefeldt
What a book!!! Personally, I think everyone ought to read it. Why? Well, for one thing in today's world, as well as in past history, "things happen". Is everyone prepared to deal with that? Not on your life. Some people will just simply freeze up. Others will run about like headless chickens. This book goes into explaining what happens when a crisis hits and why people act the way they do. The thing is, with the knowledge given in this book one can well.....sort of "program" their mind to at least try to respond properly. Also, one of the great things about this book is the way it explains what is going on. Easy to understand, so you don't need to be an astrophysist. This book is not about laying in food supplies or building bomb shelters. It IS a book that will help you keep your head when things go really bad.

Lucifer's Son (Temptation Chronicle), by Sergey Mavrodi

Not for the shy and timid! As raw as a Russian winter. Does the Devil exist?
Is there really a fallen angel named Lucifer

Are the temptations that beset mankind really the products of an evil Satan? Are the fires of Hell a reality? And your answers to these questions are:_____? Undecided, perhaps? Then, read on.

Compared favorably by many to renown authors of horror and suspense such as Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Bram Stoker, Russia's Master of Horror Sergey Mavrodi introduces us to his world... the world of angels and devils, of Lucifer and Lucifer's son, the world of temptation and seduction in his latest masterpiece of deviltry and suspense. In a world of horror and fear that is almost too realistic to be fiction, Mavrodi's characters burst forth from the pages, come alive and open up their innermost beings... revelations that will shock and mesmerize the reader, who--while filled with fear and anxiety--will be unable to put LUCIFER'S SON down until the last terrifying conclusion.

Review
In Mavrodi's (Apocalypse, 2013)first installment ofa series, thedevil's own son causes multiple grotesqueevents.

Fishing alongside his trusty Great Dane, Fedor is having a pleasant time untilhe witnesses a troubling scene: "He recognized the elusive,infernalposture--the icy, frozen restraint and the stillness of the ghoul who had justrisen out of the grave." Fedor flees his campsite only to return thenextday and find that his friendly dog has changed ("the stillness of thedog was unnatural"). Fast-forward to Viktor, a computer programmer goingthrough a rough patch with his wife, Masha. After their apartment is visited bya "grim-lookingold man," Viktor is launched into a state ofparanoia, amplified by a Great Dane Masha brings home. He dreams his wifehas sex with the dog; afterward, Masha and Viktor engage in love making thatleaves Viktor feeling"as if it was not him who made love to his own wifebut someone else."Soon, the previously barren Masha announces she ispregnant.Other characters find themselves in similarly fantastic andunfortunate situations; for example,Igor sells his soul on television and dealswith the consequences, and Andrey struggles to survive an unforgiving forest. The stories--interspersed with conversations between Lucifer and hisson--contain their share of terror and brutality. Fans of Tales from theCrypt-like fare will find a similar world of the hapless and the morbid, such as a man who sees a note, signed by his wife, which approves the use ofhis body for necrophilia. The dialogue needs trimming (one character explains,"There's 10 grand in every pack. Here, hundred euro bills in every pack,100 euros, 100 bills in a pack, 100times 100--10,000"), but an over allsense of desperation will rivet readers.

Protracted but deliciously creepy explorations of the macabre.

~Kirkus Book Reviews

This imaginative, dark fantasy explores the innate depravity in the hearts of men.

Sergey Mavrodi's dark fantasy, Lucifer's Son: The TemptationChronicles,Book One, lays bare the depravity of the human heart aseveryday men make bargains with the devil to obtain their desires.

Composed of a series of vignettes, the book is united both by theme and by thepresence of a prescient, mysterious man in his thirties who offers to fulfilleach protagonist's deepest wish--an "opportunity" that comes withconditions that would be totally unacceptable were it not for the lust, greed, and desire for power already lurking in each man's heart.

Mavrodi has a good grasp of theworkings of the human mind and the weakness of the human will. He adeptlyreveals the mental gymnastics that the protagonists go through as they plumbthe depths of their own inner worlds in an attempt to justify the betrayal ofall they hold sacred for some short-term, ego-based gain. With his knowledge ofeach man's weakness, the evil one is able to craft a scenario that, in mostcases, his victim is unable to refuse. Thus, the book reveals how thin theveneer of morality, honor, and love can be, even when the man being tempted isan apparently upright citizen, husband, father, and employee.

The picture the book gives of the humancondition is almost uniformly bleak, with sadomasochistic sex andpornography high on the list of men's hidden desires. Unfortunately, it soonbecomes easy to foretell the response of each protagonist, and after a while, eventhe most lustful and imaginative orgy can become boring and repulsive--a factto which some of the characters attest. Some of the stories include morelengthy rumination and rationalization than seems necessary, and in theseplaces, the pacing drags. Furthermore, the employment of "King JamesEnglish" whenever Lucifer is addressing his son's questions makescomprehension of these passages difficult due to errors in word usage and theinclusion of infrequently used, archaic, and unfamiliar words.

The translation from Russian, done by Yuriy Chetverzhuk, generally flows well, but the book would benefit from further proofreading and editing to remedyerrors that include missing or extra words (as in the use of "the"where unnecessary), incorrect use of the apostrophe, incomplete sentences, occasional misspellings, and a certain awkwardness in the use of idiomaticexpressions.

The cover art, with its requisite flames, is appropriate and attractive. Thebook's design and layout are pleasing and easy on the eye, and the table ofcontents helpfully indicates the theme of each story. Of special interest isthe chapter "Satanist. Day 11," in which a Satanist makes a ratherconvincing argument that the world is actually ruled by Satan, and is thebetter for it. With this imaginative, dark book in which Lucifer's work is made easy by the innate depravity ofman, Mavrodi easily defends histhesis that "a grain of evil seed was sown in Adam's heart from thebeginning."

~Foreword Reviews

About the Author
Sergei Panteleevich Mavrodi was born on August 11, 1955 inMoscow, Russia.

In the year 1993 he was the only one who openly opposed the privatization thatstarted in those times, saying that it was a real robbery of the country, andthat he would spare all efforts to prevent it. In the same year, on the basisof the cooperative he created the joint-stock company MMM. The plan was simple:to accumulate people's money, buy up all state property on the money auctionsheld at that moment, and distribute among the shareholders. Less than sixmonths MMM encompassed already about 15 million members, and Mavrodi himselfcontrolled more than one third of the country's budget.

At that point, he was arrested on a completely absurd charge of tax evasion(the criminal case later fell to pieces), and all cash budget of the company wasseized and disappeared to an undisclosed location. In particular, only from thehead office of MMM authorities took out 17 truckloads of money.

Straight from prison Mavrodi registered as a candidate for Deputy in the StateDuma of the Russian Federation at the special election in one of the districts. In this regard he was released. He easily won election with a huge margin andbecame Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation. After a year onalmost-unanimous decision of deputies he was stripped of his deputy powers (thefirst case in the history of Russia).

In 2003 Mavrodi was arrested again and placed in the federal special prison#99/1, the gloomiest and obscure institution of modern Russia. Sharing his cellwith professional killers, maniacs, terrorists and criminal lords, he went on15 hunger strikes (one of them was dry and lasted for 8 days) and countlesspunishment cells (he was even released from the disciplinary cell).

In the year 2007 Mavrodi was released.

The novel "Lucifer's Son" was written by Sergei Mavrodi while in thefederal special prison #99/1.

A Russian's View of Satan Teaching His Son "The Ropes"
By Douglas Ewan Cameron
Lucifer’s Son (The Temptation Chronicles – Book I) by Sergey Mavrodi

If you are into the occult, demon worship, Satanism or the like, you will probably find this book to your liking. Translated from its original Russian there are places that are a little rough, words that are archaic and/or unfamiliar, but the web can help you through those moments as can the context in which the term is used. The book is written in a series of vignettes/short stories regarding various temptations that Satan explains to his son in the first 21 days of his son’s life. The first two chapters (vignettes) deal with the birth of the son of Lucifer and then the rest deal with temptations, each story introduced by a conversation between Lucifer and his son and then their conclusion at the end of the story. My favorite introduction is for Day 9 (Chapter 11):
And Lucifer said:
–If thou want to make a man unhappy, just give him all that he wants.
And Lucifer was asked by His Son”
Wherefore?
And Lucifer answer’d to His Son”
–Because a man always wishes f’r too much.
Many of the chapters deal with sex and can be unsettling, but if you are into this kind of book, you probably won’t be bothered. I found Lucifer to be much nicer than I had ever envisioned. For many, short stories are difficult to write because you must tell the story (get your point across) in such a short space. Sergey Mavrodi does it well although he tends to ramble when someone is thinking about his or her temptation and most of the temptations are for men. The last one is interesting because it seems to be about the author having just completed writing this book. Obviously from the title, there are expected sequels.

Lucifer's Son Won't Let You Sleep
By Lonnie
Make no mistake. This is a book for book lovers; people who would almost rather read than sleep and have to be reminded to eat. Like most books by Russian authors, it’s a big book in every sense of the word and has something for everyone; mysticism, Satanism, poetry, intrigue, betrayal and guidance. Like the novels of that other notable Russian author, Ayn Rand, this novel is woven through with political discourse and philosophical questioning. It’s a fine book for a long winter’s read. If you’re that kind of bibliophile-reader -- settle back and enjoy!

Don't waste your time if you are looking for quality reading.
By Linda v.
Terrible book. This is not a complex, well written story about the temptations of human nature. It is a sorry excuse to capitalize on torture and rape. It even goes so far as to bring child molesting into the mix. There are so many issues that could be brought up about the travails of one who sells his soul. The premise alone could be a much better book, one of remorse and redemption; life lessons. No, we have torture and rape. No further thoughts-the characters do themselves in pronto after the story is told. I expected more from the description. This must be a self publication. I did hear it advertised on public media. Not always a good recommend, but I didn't think it would be as bad as this.
Deleting it from my que- I don't want any part of it.

Nagarjuna (Second Edition): Buddhism's Most Important Philosopher, by Richard H. Jones

Nagarjuna stands second only to the Buddha in his importance in Buddhist thought. The concept of “emptiness (shunyata)” became the central ontological concept in Mahayana Buddhism thanks to his effort. Not only did he found the Madhyamaka tradition in India, understanding his philosophy is needed to understand the Zen tradition and the Dalai Lama’s Tibetan tradition. Included here are translations from the Sanskrit of his most important philosophical works into plain English, so that the general educated public interested in Buddhism or philosophy can understand his thought. Also included are separate commentaries and a bibliography of further readings. The works presented here collectively constitute what the Tibetans call Nagarjuna’s “analytic corpus.” Translated from the original Sanskrit are the Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way (the Mula-madhyamaka-karikas), Overturning the Objections (the Vigraha-vyavartani) with Nagarjuna’s own commentary, and the philosophical portions of the Jewel Garland of Advice (the Ratnavali). Three works that are no longer extant in Sanskrit are summarized here: Seventy Verses on Emptiness (Shunyata-saptati-karikas), Sixty Verses on Argument (Yukti-shashtikas), and Pulverizing the Categories (Vaidalya-prakarana). The expanded edition revises the entire text and adds material to the earlier essays and adds two new essays.

Dont waste your money and buy the previous edition
By Textbookwork
Well what can I say? I paid a ridiculous amount of extra money to get the latest edition of this textbook, thanks to the greed and lack of ethics of publishers.

The content of this textbook and the previous edition is 99% the same! What changes? Well what changes are simply the cases featured in the book that are provided by Newsweek. But guess what guys? Those cases are online on the Newsweek website! you just google the name of the case and you will find them online for free!

Plus what made me mad is that even those cases are outdated and the strategies of the companies have changed. There are case from 2007 and 2009.. there is one from Microsoft and the guy hired was already kicked out and works for Nokia, there is another about Mozilla vs Internet Explorer that doesn't acknowledge the changes in the Internet Explorer software.. I guess you could say the technology changes fast but you could have checked and not include a case from 2009 and outdated information!

The book itself is good cover the major strategic concepts, I liked it but don't waste your money and buy the older edition!

Happy studying!

Strategic Management
By Jmoyerak
This text was required for my final Master's level class, so I had no choice in buying it. With that being said, it presented great up-to-date company examples within in each chapter. This text pulled together information from many other classes, and integrated them into usable methods for any size organization. Also noteworthy, is that globalization is addressed constantly. The glossary was low to moderate, and there was an abundance of case studies.

Flight Dynamics Principles, by Michael V. Cook

Flight dynamicists today need not only a thorough understanding of the classical stability and control theory of aircraft, but also a working appreciation of flight control systems and consequently a grounding in the theory of automatic control. In this text the author fulfils these requirements by developing the theory of stability and control of aircraft in a systems context.

The key considerations are introduced using dimensional or normalised dimensional forms of the aircraft equations of motion only and through necessity the scope of the text will be limited to linearised small perturbation aircraft models. The material is intended for those coming to the subject for the first time and will provide a secure foundation from which to move into non-linear flight dynamics, simulation and advanced flight control. Placing emphasis on dynamics and their importance to flying and handling qualities it is accessible to both the aeronautical engineer and the control engineer.

Emphasis on the design of flight control systems
Intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying aeronautical subjects and avionics, systems engineering, control engineering
Provides basic skills to analyse and evaluate aircraft flying qualities

Excellent Window to Explore Flight dynamics
By Muhammad A. AlMubarak
This is a suitable textbook for students doing flight dynamics course. It was one of the 4 flight dynamics books I used in my course AE 426 at my university KFUPM. The others are Introduction to Aircraft Flight Dynamics, The Dynamics of Flight: The equations, and Dynamics of Flight. This review reflects my personal point of view concerning this book after a comparison I made between this book and the others motioned above.
1)Compared to (Introduction to Aircraft Flight Dynamics) and (Dynamics of Flight), this book is richer in information. It really gives more details. And this is something remarkable about it.
2)The book has very good balance between theory and application.
3)Simple to understand and it explains concepts clearly.
4) There are 9 excellent appendixes in this book that will help you refreshing your mind and can be used as summaries.
5)Unfortunately, students will find NO problems at the end of each chapter to exercise.
6)This book provides students with excellent number of examples. However, a lot of them are solved easily by PC programs like Matlab. Hence, this is the best book in flight dynamics (compared to the ones I mentioned above) to practice solving problems by software like Matlab. But, no PC programs are provided in this book. It assumes that you know one of the software used by flight dynamicists
7)Some of the examples in this book are among the problems I faced in my major exams.
8)It states the objectives in the beginning of each chapter.
9)Better figures are provided in this book compared to the others I used.
10)This book has made me very interested in further study in this complicated field of aerospace engineering.
11)It was one of the reference books that I used to do my projects. That is, it was helpful in doing my project.
