About the Author
For five years, Barbara Fleming and her husband sailed their forty-foot catamaran �Qu� B�rbara! around the Caribbean and across the Pacific Ocean, ultimately to Australia. She held a US Coast Guard captain’s license from 2005–2010. Sailing the Great Escape—�Qu� B�rbara! is her first book in a series that chronicles their escapades. Prior to her reluctant embarkation, she was self-employed as a licensed financial advisor in Tucson, AZ, serving the investment needs of over 500 clients. Before a change of careers, she had worked for twenty years in various educational, public relations, marketing, and fund-raising capacities in museums around the country. She grew up in Cleveland Heights, OH; graduated with a BS degree in biology from Chatham College, Pittsburgh, PA; and earned an MBA from Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ. Her Certificate of Achievement from the American Sailing Association hangs on her wall. She continues to take Spanish lessons twice a week and sails now on other people’s boats.

Great Escape on So Many Levels!

In Sailing the Great Escape-�Qu� B�rbara!, the author offers up her personal experience of the word "escape." From wanderlust to the clambering drive to flee disaster, Barbara Fleming recounts her voyage at sea, while escaping, too, the routine of retirement she had expected. Opting instead to accompany her husband as he realizes a lifelong dream, she prepares rigorously - financially, mentally, and physically - for the adventure ahead.

If you are uninitiated in the ways of navigation and life at sea, don't worry. Sailing the Great Escape-�Qu� B�rbara! is an adventure story with some instruction, much irony, and practical guidance in navigating waters of the unexpected. Without overdrawn self-reflection, Fleming touches on surprises, frustrations, and fears of the open sea, even when operating under rules flawlessly memorized and practiced in advance. What lies ahead is, inevitably, an outing into the uncharted, and whether on a catamaran or in a comfortable armchair, the reader can experience a great escape into a fantasy realized.

What a self centered lady

I was looking forward to read this book, but gave way half way through. The book has no purpose to it, all she does is complain about the adverse things that happen to them. Many off time she is insensitive to the ways, traditions, and customs of other countries. Example, in Jamaica she complains that it took 12hours for the customs officer to go to their boat, well imagine how many people arrive in Jamaica every day, and maybe it was the first available hour he had. It's like going to the doctor here, you will never be attended to in the schedule time, it is what it is.
So if you are sailor hoping to learn some insight on what an offshore adventure would be, forget it, this book will not teach you any new skills, no best route to take, no best ways to plan, no visa requirement information, nothing. If your hope it is to read a romance with some meaning, some message, some purpose, forget it, it is just a diary of selfish complains from an inexperient sailor.
Btw, the beginning of the book should have been a warning to me, they took their boat out for an offshore passage with an anchor and rode, with no chain whatsoever, that should have been a early warning of how inexperienced they are. Funny is that she said she did go through a Coast Guard approved sailing course.

Barbara Fleming's writing style and story is captivating. She draws you into an adventure that encompasses many challenges and trials. Despite her many fears of the sea, she choses to join her husband, Bob, in fulfilling his dream of off shore sailing. She shares with you her fears, frustrations, and excitement throughout the story. Good detail and description. I just loved the humor that Barbara interjects throughout the story. Her bits of humor had me in stitches. Extremely enjoyable and very hard to put down. My husband and I traveled in an RV on and off for five years. It takes a lot of love, patience, and forgiveness from two people to be able to live in a small space 24/7 for long periods of time especially when mishaps occur. Hats off to Barbara and Captain Bob. I can't wait for the next book.

Anna Nash just out of college lands an interview for Trendsetter Fashion Publishing. On her way up to the interview she meets Kelly. Kelly reaches out a help a girl out because you don’t want to show up at an interview for fashion wearing two mix match shoes. What else could go wrong?
Well let me tell you what else could go wrong! Adam Gerome is what goes wrong. He tall, broad with wide shoulders, full lips to die for and sexiest blue eyes you have seen that makes you feel like a teen with raging hormones all over again and makes you wondering what he got going on under that suit.

Adam Gerome is the CEO of Trendsetter Fashion Publishing thanks to his father. He has to turn this magazine around and grow up or he losing his trust fund. He does not like Anna from the start because he believes she is inexperienced for the job. But being out number he has no choice but to offer Anna the job. But the problem is that not the only thing he wants to offer Anna. You have to read to find out what happens.

I loved Book 1 in this series, and have been waiting for Book 2, a little impatiently because I wanted to find out what happens. I was not disappointed. JS Wilder is one of my new favorite authors. She pulls you into the story, and then will not let you go. This is a wonderful book, and a wonderful series. Once you start reading, you do not want to put it down. I received this book from the author in return for an honest review, and I highly recommend it.

Anna was set up by someone and can't believe she is being fired when she knows she did not plagiarize her article from Paris Fashion week. Adam tried to get his dad to let Anna stay on at the magazine but he doesn't want to listen. Will they be able to prove who set Anna up and will their romance be able to survive?

Unique, Refreshing approach!

There is a voice in this book, and you can just HEAR this guy as he admonishes writers and drills into their heads the step-by step guide to reporting and writing. The tone is firm with a direct approach to feature writing as the author is adamant that, "reporting and writing can NOT be divorced."

I like the sharp conversational tone; it's like sitting in the classroom. He is very clever with the similes and metaphors to clearly drive his point.

Although this book has made the rounds for years, Blundell offers refreshing ideas and unique insight to writing. He speaks of experience as a Wall Street Journal writer. This is HIS voice, and not a slew of other professional writers churning out a how to book.

I like a quote of his when he tells us that the READER requires specific information and our first priority is to meet that requirement and also that the reader has a deeper and more universal need that has to be met or, he flees. The author said, "nothing is easier than to stop reading."

You won't find the usual writing book addressing topics like these. A sample chapter is Raw Materials - generating ideas; Extrapolation (beyond the event lies a broader, more significant story); Synthesis (assembling promising story ideas from what looks like a junkpile of spare parts); Localization (thinking big); Projection (declining to follow the media sheep to a pasture already overgrazed) and Viewpoint Switching (thinking of a story as a piece of terrain with varying topography).

Also topics titled Shaping Ideas; Story Dimensions, Planning and Execution, Organization, and you get great insight into Handling Key Story Elements that delves into the dreaded leads and endings.

What is interesting in a unique approach to his section titled Wordcraft. He assumes that you the reader already know grammar, syntax and usage. So his goal is to show us how to achieve certain effects at certain places in the story.

You will read some full texts on sample stories that are sprinkled throughout the chapters. Blundell also provides reading material for the writer. He says, "whole forests have died to fill the marketplace with other writing books." One suggestion is Zissner's "On Writing Well."

This is a unique writing book and is meant to read completely. ....Rizzo

High quality "how to" on reporting and feature writing. An excellent gift for the budding (or struggling) journalist. Somewhat less useful for non-journalists seeking to blog or to write op-ed pieces.

A storyteller's Bible---surely the best such book available

Contains a lifetime's worth of information---and inspiration. I've read it twice, and dip into it periodically because it contains so much truth. I was a journalist for ten years, and have read a fair number of how-to-write books, but nothing I've seen is in the same league with Blundell's work. He provides a comprehensive system for organizing material and for sharpening and vivifying a story to a professional level. While it may be true that beyond a certain point good writing cannot be taught, there are definitely techniques to master and mistakes to avoid. Apply Blundell's principles and your writing will almost have to improve.

    It's about time! Julie Morgenstern has written an organizing book that covers a new way of looking at the task of organizing effectively without labeling or blaming the person behind the lack of organization. Rather, she says, people who don't organize just never learned how to organize, through no fault of their own--after all, it's not a skill that's taught in school. That said, she gets down to work helping you figure out an organizing system that will really work for you, not a system based on cookie-cutter filing concepts or special storage units.

    Morgenstern's "from the inside out" system begins by laying out the possible reasons for a failure of organization: technical errors (like having a complex organizing system that breaks down), external realities (like not enough space for your belongings), and psychological obstacles (like fear of failure--or success). Then, her Analyze and Strategize steps help create a plan of action based on your needs and goals, and the brief chapter called "Attack: Getting the Job Done" offers basic ideas for making space. The largest section of the book, "Applying What You've Learned," addresses the specifics of organizing workspaces, home offices, living spaces, and storage areas.     Very helpful

    I borrowed this book from my sister about 4 years ago and never gave it back. I bought one for her and my mother recently. The 3 of us tend to have "piles" in our houses. Not hoarders (for real), but definitely clutterers.

    This book is the first one I've read that outlined a plan that made sense to me. The first time I opened the book and the author talked about her childhood bedroom with the turquoise linoleum floor and how everything was stuffed under her bed, in her closet and in her desk (and all over the room floor, too), I knew the book would be a fun read (being a child of the 70s and linoleum flooring myself).

    My two-room apartment had "goat paths" one could use - every other part of the floor was covered with needlessness, as was every flat surface in the place. I read the book from cover to cover, took notes on how the author's system works, applied the system and to this day still use it. I'm not perfect - I still clutter, but it's down about 75% since before this system. I'll be moving by the end of 2014 to a new apartment, so I've taken the book out once again, knowing that I'm committed to pare down items that absolutely do not need to move with me.

    There are no more goat paths and I've used the system to really clear out the closets - the closets were useless because there was so much unused/not-going-to-be-used stuff in them. Once I was able to clear them out it was easier to apply the organizing portion of the book.

    Best organizing book I've ever read; super helpful

    Wow, I finally found a GREAT book about the underlying reasons why we struggle so much with getting -- and staying -- organized.

    Most of my co-workers think I'm really organized, but at home things were a mess. I just hid the mess inside closets and drawers. Reading this book helped me start tackling each room methodically, one area, one shelf or drawer, one little piece at a time. A key insight is that each thing must "have a place." I was constantly losing my keys, reading glasses, favorite earrings, checkbook, and cell phone -- but now after reading this book I have a designated place for everything. This makes it so easy to find them! For example, now I have one little drawer for all my reading glasses and I've found over 20 pair in the past couple of months that used to be scattered all over the place.

    I also love the book's idea of creating "zones" -- like a "money zone" in my office where I now keep all my financial records, checkbook, spare change, and bills to pay. I also created a "gift zone" where I keep presents and wrapping paper and boxes, a "fix-it zone" where I keep my tools, glue, and various broken things that need to be fixed, and a "play zone" for all the jigsaw puzzles, board games, and scrapbooking supplies that I like to play with in my spare time.

    I really enjoyed the inner work that the first few chapters addressed, such as what are the costs of being disorganized and what would my life be like if I were organized? So many books about getting organized address only the "technique" (like divide your clutter into "keep" or "donate" or "toss"), but this one really dives deep into why it matters and how to build on what already works in your life. It made me feel increasingly successful as I continued to work through the excellent exercises in the book. I've only been using it for 3 months but my life and belongings are already SO much more organized, and I feel so much less stressed.

    The author Julie Morgenstern makes getting organized fun and fascinating. I've already recommended this to many friends. Well written, funny, human, and a huge help!

    The best purchase I have ever made in my whole life.

    I can quite honestly say this book changed my life. I grew up in the most chaotic, disorganized household you could imagine. My mother is a hoarder, so basic organization skills were completely absent from my upbringing, and I struggled against this for the better part of my adult life. I seriously used to wonder how the "normal people" lived. It affected every area of my life, as you may well imagine.

    That is, until I got this book! In here, she doesn't teach you one system; she teaches you how to create YOUR OWN systems. She taught me the skills that my mother, God love her, never could. People now make fun of me because of how organized my spaces are, and then ask me to organize theirs! Since buying this book roughly 6 years ago, I have become one of those annoying people who are capable of keeping their glass front cabinets, shelving, and drawers in near perfect order with minimal effort. It's absolutely crazy, but 100% true. This was far and away the best purchase I have EVER made. I recently bought two more copies to give as Christmas gifts to my mom and sister. Hopefully it will have as big an impact on them as it did on me!

    How The Paleo Approach Saved My Health (after years of low-carb paleo)

    While you all have waited patiently for years as Dr. Sarah Ballantyne wrote The Paleo Approach, I was lucky enough to begin following her protocol well before it was available to the public. I started my journey on healing when Practical Paleo first came out and I started with the methodologies Diane put forth for autoimmune conditions (autoimmune protocol: AIP).

    Problem was, after following the AIP for nearly 3 months I wasn't seeing healing. Some of the super negative symptoms were alleviated, like adrenal fatigue, clumps of hair falling out and terrible acne, but when I reintroduced foods I would get flares again. I distinctly remember it being SO. HARD. Like, temper tantrums in the car hard because everything, EVERYTHING I was used to eating had eggs or nightshades and I was overwhelmed at the idea of living the rest of my life that way. All of which contributed to my ongoing struggles with depression - the obsession with food was beginning to overwhelm me, it was starting to cause disordered eating again, as I looked for ways to "get around" the AIP.

    I was so frustrated, I began talking with Sarah about what her thoughts and recommendations were. It was at this time that Sarah was hundreds of thousands of words deep into writing The Paleo Approach (no, seriously, it's a tome). There were a few things she shared with me about what she found in the scientific literature about recommendations she was going to make, versus things I'd read in Practical Paleo and other resources.

    And so it began, in 2013 I started following The Paleo Approach. Mostly this meant that I focused more on what to add to my diet instead of what to remove from it. Sarah and I talked every week on The Paleo View and nearly each episode each one of us would get more and more geeked out on nutrient-density, our new favorite word. We began exploring healing foods; Matt and I became so inspired that we wrote the nose-to-tail cookbook, Beyond Bacon - almost every recipe of which includes bone stock and/or lard (high in Vitamin D and easy for me to digest).

    I'd been following a low-fat, low-carb version of paleo for years. Turns out, it made me sick. It affected my adrenals, thyroid function, and ability for my body to heal itself. I was nutrient-poor, despite eating what I thought was the best diet possible. Perhaps for some people eating that way is healthy for them, but for me as a busy woman with no gallbladder and previous metabolic syndrome, it ended up as a disaster long-term. Turns out, a high protein diet (especially when the protein is mostly poultry) wasn't doing what I thought it was for my health. I got over my fear of fat and incorporated more nutrient-dense healing fats, specifically lard, coconut oil and ghee/butter (I was shocked how well I tolerated ghee and butter after a lifetime of being dairy intolerant). I switched my proteins to a majority of grass-fed red meat and pastured pork, added seafood and incorporated the true superfoods: organ meat and bone broth.

    One of the things I learned from Sarah is the importance of vegetables. I've popularized #morevegetablesthanavegetarian in social media - but it was Sarah's focus on the importance of vegetables - specifically a variety of colorful ones - that really made me focus on them. For a while, I'd actually reduced the types of vegetables I was eating because I wanted to stay away from foods high in insoluble fiber - which I personally let affect the quantity of veggies I was eating. When Sarah told me she had research that greens rich in insoluble fiber, even cruciferous ones, showed to be positive healing foods from her research it was a big change in how I approached nourishing myself. As I started adding in much more vegetables, especially leafy greens, it was amazing how much it affected my digestion and how I felt.

    From the prior AIP protocol I was already consuming fermented foods rich in probiotics, which is another big important factor in helping to heal the gut through food. So then I turned to lifestyle factors.

    I learned to love myself and let things go. I know... it's hokey. And intangible. And something I can't possibly define for you to replicate... although I've tried to articulate it a zillion times on The Paleo View. Stress Management was defined and something I began when I first started Practical Paleo`s AIP. But it's not something one can fix overnight. Over time, and through Sarah's repeated reminders of the scientific backing behind stress being a leading causes of health deterioration, I learned how to slay the stress monster.

    First, I gave myself permission to do something(s) for me. Without guilt or remorse. It was really hard in the beginning to know I was missing out on time I could (or as I thought, should) be doing: helping with dinner, spending time with the kids, staying later at the office, etc. But then I realized I deserve to take care of the only body I'll have to carry me through this life. My children deserve a role model to show them that sometimes it's OK to stop and put the gas mask on yourself before helping others - I learned to take care of myself first before putting others ahead of me. This, was huge.

    I learned to breathe. There was a point at which my stress levels had caused an eye twitch I couldn't get rid of for months. And I had begun grinding my teeth and experiencing frequent headaches from it. I even had about a 6 week period of time where I was experiencing frequent anxiety attacks in crossfit, unable to breathe when something ended up being harder than I anticipated. It made me want to quit, and I've never been a quitter. It was at this time Sarah talked to me about relaxation techniques she highly encouraged. It was so bizarre for this scientist to be telling me to do some hokey-pokey-crunchy-granola-meditation... but she was right. My body was overwhelmed and needed a break. So several times a day I intentionally stood up and walked around the office, finding someone to smile with and change my environment while activating happy hormones. During crossfit I learned to breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth with deep, intentional breaths. Soon, the twitching and anxiety attacks just went away!

    I learned to let things go. This was the hardest for me and is something I'm still actively working on. I talk out loud about what I can or cannot do. It's about acknowledgement, doing what you're able the best you can, and then forgiveness. What a concept... all backed by science to help you be healthier!

    Be positive! No, really. Of course not everything's great. But almost everything has something positive about it. So I learned to frame things to myself positively and it helped me have an overall positive outlook and attitude.

    Sarah goes over LOTS more stuff in The Paleo Approach but these are the things that I personally applied to my own life.
    The results?

    I've resolved ALL of the autoimmune related health issues I experienced in 2011 and 2012.

    Let me restate that, because I want to make sure it's heard. I no longer have symptoms of autoimmune disease, adrenal fatigue, micro-nutrient deficiencies, skin breakouts or depression (at all). My body has not only recovered fully from the autoimmune flare, but I've actually been able to heal my body even further - now able to consume foods like high quality heavy cream and cheeses without distress! And when accidentally exposed to gluten or intentionally eat things I know my body has a difficult time with (like nightshades or grains) I find each and every time my body responds better than the time before. I have successfully reintroduced nuts, seeds, chocolate, egg yolks and seed spices (all in moderation) but have found that egg whites and nightshade vegetables (except peeled white potatoes) are something I can not (yet) tolerate.

    I plan to continue my healing journey and hope to be a role model for those out there with autoimmune conditions. Keeping in mind that 2 years ago I was depressed with barely enough energy to slog through the day (thyroid and adrenal issues), I now am a fully charged woman who manages this blog, a podcast, writing books, a full-time job, raising 3 boys AND am training for a StrongMan competition in just a few months. I'm happy to report that The Paleo Approach quite literally gave me my life back.

    Not quite all I was looking for

    There is a lot of information in this book on why you should follow this protocol if you have an autoimmune disease. She includes a lot of scientific data to prove her point. All that is good.

    She then gives information on how to start the program, which foods to avoid and which are ok. Then how to re-introduce foods that you have eliminated from your diet. Also good. (Kindle/tablet readers see my warning below)

    Then information on lifestyle change, also good.

    I think there was too much scientific information...at least half the book as it related to paleo and auto-immune disease. Then more when discussing lifestyle change in the second half.

    I would have preferred less science and more details on how to actually use the diet. I would have liked examples of several meal plans, I would have liked more specific information on how much to eat of each food group. I use My Fitness Pal to keep track of my daily intake of all foods and their nutritional vakues. I still am sometimes eating more carbs than fat or protein, sometimes the protein is more than fat. Because I am guessing as to quantity/ serving size. My understanding is fat should be the highest percentage of calories, then protein and then carbs, but I am not sure how to get there. I need that type of detail.
    There are NO recipes in the book.

    WARNING. I purchased the Kindle edition. The lists of foods are basically unreadable. Parts of words are scattered all over the page. This is true of 90 % of all the lists in the book. I had to go online to get food lists from other sources. So that part of the book was worthless to me. But did not base my review on that, but certainly left a bad experience. That should be one of the most important details, but could not be read.
    I feel like I did not get my money's worth with the Kindle edition.

    While I am not thrilled with the Kindle edition of this book, I am very pleased with the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol diet. I have been following it religiously for just over 4 months now and can attest to its effectiveness. I have Myasthenia Gravis, a rare autoimmune disease that causes muscle weakness.
    Prior to starting this diet, I was so weak that some days I could barely walk, had problems swallowing, breathing and severe double vision. On good days, I could go to one store with my husband and help with laundry and at times some light chores. Now 4 months later, I play golf twice a week, can drive myself to stores and actually shop. I am back to doing all the cooking, laundry and many other household chores. I also walk 1 to 1.5 miles a day. I do have to rest often and I need a handicap flag when playing golf. I still require routine medication for this disease. But instead of getting weaker each month, I am now getting stronger.
    My husband says this diet is a miracle and I agree.

    It is not a 'fun' diet to be on. It is very restrictive and I miss a lot of my favorite foods, plus it can be a little more expensive. But in my opinion all that is worth being able to participate in life again and feel better while doing it. All my physicians have reviewed the diet and all have 100% approved and encouraged me to stick with it. For some reason I found that surprising. I assumed at least one would have some doubts or concerns. But it was just the opposite.

    Just thought I would share my experience.

    I'm healthy today thanks to Sarah's protocol!

    For anyone with an autoimmune disease, this is the most incredible gift from heaven you could ever wish for. It is the most thoroughly researched, detailed and comprehensive roadmap for recovery. Seriously, this book is going to change thousands of lives, and that is no understatement!

    How do I know this, you ask? I used these principles, personally, to heal myself from two debilitating autoimmune diseases.

    Back when I discovered the Autoimmune Protocol, Sarah’s blog was in its infancy, and there were a few voices in the Paleo community talking about these “extra modifications” that were necessary for those with autoimmune disease. While I started with an elimination diet, my journey ended up addressing all of these other pieces of the puzzle that didn’t really fit into a simple diet change. Things like learning how to prioritize sleep, managing my stress, getting the right amount of physical activity, sunlight exposure, circadian rhythms, and doing further testing and treatment for deeper issues (gut pathogens, parasites, fat malabsorption, and the MTHFR mutation) and finally finding meditation and doing work on an emotional level. Sarah addresses all of these topics, and then some, in this book, and has backed up what many of us have found by trial and error with hard science.

    The Paleo Approach is divided into two parts. The first half of the book is called “The Cause”, and its chapters detail what autoimmune disease is, how the immune system works (complete with amazing diagrams), what causes autoimmunity, how diet and lifestyle factors contribute to our conditions, and what to do with all of this information. The second half is called “The Cure”, and it contains the details of Sarah’s plan—which foods to include, lifestyle habits that promote healing, how to transition, troubleshooting the protocol, and reintroductions. I’m not going to spend a lot of time summarizing the information here—but just know that Sarah has gone into an incredible amount of detail to talk about just about any question or topic you could have.

    Some of my favorite aspects of the book:

    -Comprehensive charts of foods to eat and avoid. She has also included a copy in the back of the book for easy reference. When I say comprehensive, I mean eight pages, with a small font. I would be surprised if anyone could find a food that isn’t included on either of these lists!

    -Detailed illustrations to complement the intro chapters. The immune system is incredibly complex to understand, and Sarah’s illustrations made so many of the concepts of leaky gut and the immune system more understandable. They are really well done!

    -Chapter reviews, summary guides, and nutrient tables. I found the chapter reviews helpful for synthesizing the most important information in a section. The summary guides in the back are an awesome reference, as are the nutrient tables.

    -Troubleshooting checklist. This is an awesome tool for anyone who has tried the approach and needs some ideas of areas to consider because they aren’t making progress.

    The last thing I want to tell you about—this book has a lot of information. By a lot, I mean over 400 pages, literally crammed full of the most thoroughly researched, pertinent information you could hope for. Sarah tackles some pretty deep scientific concepts with her signature approachable, and fun writing style. I think it is absolutely necessary for those of us with autoimmunity to understand these concepts in-depth, so that we can have a better understanding of how our bodies interact with the environment as well as so that we can advocate for ourselves best in the doctor’s office.

    If you have an autoimmune disease, please do yourself a favor and get this book.

    If I haven’t convinced you by this point, I don’t think there is any hope for you! I am living a healthy and happy life today, because of these principles—they saved my life. Sarah is an incredible force and we are so lucky she was able to create such a life-changing roadmap for recovery using ancestral diet and lifestyle changes to heal from autoimmune disease!
