About the Author

Victor LaValle is the author of the short story collection Slapboxing with Jesus, three novels, The Ecstatic, Big Machine, and The Devil in Silver, and an ebook-only novella, Lucretia and the Kroons.

A Return To Lovecraft's RED HOOK...

In 1925 H.P. Lovecraft published a story titled, THE HORROR AT RED HOOK. In it, a detective by the name of Malone investigates strange goings-on in the largely immigrant populated section of New York City, Red Hook. The story takes place in Lovecraft’s familiar universe of cosmic horror, always subject to the return of the Old Ones.

Now, it is no secret that Lovecraft held strong feelings about certain minority and immigrant groups, and THE HORROR AT RED HOOK is often singled out as the most egregious example. Because of this, there are some today that would prefer to banish Lovecraft’s entire body of work to the scrap heap because of it. I don’t happen to share that view. Lovecraft was a strange man, for certain, but a man of his time. A better response is what author Victor Lavalle has done. A black author of weird fiction, Lavalle has taken Lovecraft’s tale and reworked it from another viewpoint, the viewpoint of black would-be street-troubadour Charles Thomas Tester who plays a pivotal role in the unearthly happenings in the tenements of Robert Suydam, in the summoning of The Sleeping King.

THE BALLAD OF BLACK TOM is a wonderful novella, and I would strongly suggest reading Lovecraft’s story first, to set the scene, and to better appreciate how Lavalle has returned us to Lovecraft’s imperfect world. There are a few truly horrifying scenes to be had.

As smart and poignant as one might expect from Victor Lavalle

As smart and poignant as one might expect from Victor Lavalle, The Ballad of Black Tom repurposes one of Lovecraft's most racist stories, "The Horror at Red Hook," into a commentary on the racial politics of its time from multiple perspectives. Lavalle makes use of the Lovecraftian universe without the heavy-handed trappings that mar your typical pastiche. His depiction of Harlem, Queens, and Brooklyn in the late '20s is deft, evoking the significant differences between that period and our own in population and culture. Lavalle doesn't skimp on the horrific and dark fantastic, however, and the monstrous elements of both the supernatural and the realistic realms intertwine throughout the tale.

Eery Quietness Masterfully Portrayed

I heard the author interviewed on NPR and I immediately empathized with his experience with reading Lovecraft as a young person. I too read all the Lovecraft I could get my hands on and me being of mixed background, I felt a twinge of sadness for his fear of dark people from other countries. But for some reason I did not feel his own repulsion was directed at me. His fear of other races and people did not deter me from appreciating the crawling descriptive horror in those stories. By coincidence I had just recently reread the Horror of Red Hook and even though I knew Lovecraft was phobically racist, it really hit me and I kept wanting to sit with him at a cafe in New York (I lived in NYC for 12 years) and try to get him to separate his racism from his fear and horror of the world.

Well if I can't do that then let me enjoy this wonderful novel by Victor LaValle. Thank you Victor for the shared childhood memory and most of all thank you for your writing.

“En tanto poeta, zas, novelista”, le gustaba decir a Osvaldo Lamborghini: a ese pasaje que casi no se puede medir en el tiempo o a las preguntas que implica, al paso del verso a la prosa, del poema a la aventura, de la fotocopia al libro industrial apunta “Desbunde y felicidad”. El objeto de estudio de su �ltimo y extenso cap�tulo, que instaura el pasado inmediato y el tiempo cero del libro, parece ser el pu�ado de novelas de unos poetas (Cucurto, Dalia Rosetti, Gabriela Bejerman, Pablo P�rez, Dani Umpi) y de un guionista inconcluso (Alejandro L�pez), y los cuentos de Cecilia Pav�n. Pero “Desbunde y felicidad” no se detiene ah�. Por el desfiladero de esas escrituras, de sus operaciones de producci�n y circulaci�n, llega a un lugar extra�o y compacto: un peque�o espacio de intercambios amistosos que en la potente succi�n del cambio de siglo en la Argentina redescubren y fundan una pol�tica de la lengua y de los cuerpos, y un mercado que oscila entre la industria y la feria. En ese proceso discute las preguntas que le dan sentido a la instalaci�n de un canon y abre una perspectiva para leer una literatura rioplatense que nos es estrictamente contempor�nea.

Cecilia Palmeiro naci� en Buenos Aires. Estudi� Letras y ense�� Semiolog�a, Teor�a Literaria y Estudios Culturales en la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Es Doctora en Literatura Latinoamericana por la Universidad de Princeton, especializada en literaturas argentina y brasile�a contempor�neas. Ha publicado traducciones y ensayos de literatura argentina y brasile�a en la Argentina, Brasil, Estados Unidos y M�xico. Ense�� Estudios Latinoamericanos Contempor�neos en Birkbeck, Universidad de Londres. Actualmente es becaria postdoctoral del CONICET (Argentina) y profesora de Teor�as Contempor�neas en la Universidad de Tres de Febrero. “Desbunde y felicidad. De la cartonera a Perlongher” fue publicado por primera vez en 2011, y ser� editado en Brasil por la Editora de la Universidade Estadual de Rio de Janeiro en 2014.
