Terrific book - many fantastic and practical lessons how to raise happy & resilient children

I loved the book! I am a mother of 2 small children - 6.5yr old boy and a 2.5yr old girl and I was born in Russia in the early 70s during communism. Hence, many of the values and habits described by Tanya have literarily made me laugh and cry - this book has touched so many raw nerves (in a good way) and I enjoyed Tanya's both anthropological as well as 'real and down-to-earth' description of how we were raised and how we now continue to raise our children. The key points that have resonated with me from the book are: Russian mothers are somewhere half-way between the Chinese "Tiger Mums" and the "Western Mums" - they are very warm, loving and giving but also expect respect and good behaviour from their children. Many things in a russian-mum household are simply 'non-negotiable' - my children have to ALWAYS say 'please and thank you', they don't scream in public places - and if they do there are serious consequences (docking system for our son - usually Minecraft ban or we take away money from his coin box - and time-out for our daughter - regardless where we are. The consequences are swift and consistent. Another point raised by Tanya is that russian mothers don't 'do guilt trips' - neither for themselves nor for their girlfriends - this is SOOO true! My husband and I regularly go away without our children for a couple of nights - we live them with a nanny as our grandparents are elderly - but they do come and play at our house with the children and take them on excursions etc. We miss our bubs when away - but also LOVE our time away without them and re-connect as a couple on every level. The other common guilt trip in the West is about working mothers. Culturally, soviet-raised women were raised to believe that all mothers should work - when I was growing up in the 70s it was very unusual for a mother of my friends not to work and we always thought that that was odd. So, there is absolutely no guilt for the women of my vintage to go back to work - IF we feel like it or NEED to. No judgement - no long blogs about why one chooses one over the other and no long conversations with friends who are not working trying to win their approval. Thank you to Tanya for all those great stories about russian 'soupchik' and 'kotletki' - it made my heart melt! So this book will probably stir some memories to many of us born in Russia but living in the West (I live in Australia but have also lived in London for 10 years, Germany 2 etc). To all the non-russian mums reading the book: we are all very similar and we are driven by similar instincts and needs. If there are a few little things that you can take away from this book - it may make your mothering a little easier as I'm finding it a thoroughly amazing experience so far!

Motherhood Russian (Elite) Style

This book reads like a first draft; there are some good ideas and points there, but serious revision is needed. Much of the writing is repetitive and could easily be abridged without losing any content. The text also does not lack typos, which again just make it seem like it is in need of some good editing.

Once you can filter out the repetition, irrelevant notes on current ongoing political events, and the author's biased presentation of Russian vs. American, London or basically all non-Russian moms, the book does offer some good insight into Russian motherhood for the upper middle and wealthy echelons of Moscow's society.

Furthermore, parts of the book, such as the prologue, provide a great overview of the key concepts which are the essence of all Russian child-rearing. Being a child of the Soviet era, it was both humorous and reminiscent to read these qualities of Russian parenting laid out in such true fashion. However, beyond the items laid out in the prologue, the author makes many generalizations that do not span all classes of Russian society. While she states that the book is based on women throughout Russia, it is clearly focused on her circle of Moscow elite or similar, which she herself says are not representative of the whole country. Then, why the title?

When I downloaded the book, only one review had been posted, and I couldn't wait to read the book and disagree with that harsh review. Unfortunately, this was not the read I hoped for. While I think that it's a great theme and has potential, it is in need of editing and either more research or a title change. (Written by Olga Hathaway)

We bought this to pick experiments for a science fair. We have tried three so far without luck. Written well but if the experiments don't work it is not worth having. Plus it frustrates the child.

Below par in application and theory

Here's this book in a nutshell. "It tries to cover forecasting techniques theories while using a basic tool like excel, but in doing so it doesnt do justice to either theory OR excel".

The book is "ok" until simple linear regression, and after that it does no justice to theory and barely uses any excel. To give an example, I didnt see any excel based examples for multiple regression even though ANOVA is a feature under data analysis in excel and ANOVA was covered by the author (at least in theory) ... net, the author fails in application and even the theory was under par.

I was reading this book to decide if it can be recommended for a small business owner who may not have the budget for expensive analytical tools such as SAS or SPSS. If you are building your forecast based on time series analysis, then this book may have some value to offer ... but if you are looking to forecast based on independent variables other than time, then you've got to look elsewhere.

This is a good book to help forecasters learn the very basics of the skill in excel. However, I was looking for a more in-depth explanation of the box-Jenkins forecasting method ARIMA process. Specifically, how to construct an MA(1), MA(2),... The book did not meet my expectations.

Great series. Ended perfectly. Diamond Johnson is a great writer. I throughly enjoy all her books. She doesn't disappoint. She never makes her readers wait months or years for books to continue in her series. Her characters come to life and you get pulled into the story line. She really has a niche with love stories that are mixed with urban tales. Talented lady and it doesn't help that she's a Florida State Seminole like myself...it's all the way up (Remy MA voice) from here chica. Good job!

I absolutely love this book. It grasps your attention from the very beggining. It shows you a strong individual facing different things in life but still moving forward and taking care of prioroties.

Dreka is a very strong young women and very indeoendent. Seth is the perfect man for a women that has endured so much in life.

This book was so real it was like watching a movie rite before my eyes while reading. Everything was very much detailed and I loved it.

Finally! A resource for visual learners!!

I've purchased several other study/review books to help me in nursing school but I think this is the one. I saw an ad for this book this summer and I got so excited! It has the same info as other study/review books but the pictures, colors, and spacing makes it much easier for me to focus. I can't stand reading plain black and white single-spaced text! This book has enough colors to keep my attention but not so much that it looks like a Pre-K book. This is first book that broke down DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation) in a way that made sense to me.

A must have resource for the cardiac surgical nurse !!!

I am an RN with 8 years of cardiac recovery unit experience. I've been out of nursing for 10 years. I just recently have gone back to work after taking an RN refresher course. This book covers everything you will need to know weather you're a new or seasoned nurse going in to the cardiac critical care area. I am so glad I found this book. It was recommended to me from a coworker. Apparently it is the gold standard of reference for cardiac surgical nurses. I can't recommend it enough!

A stellar snapshot of the mobile industry

Mobile is big. Mobile is disruptive. Mobile will impact every facet of our daily lives. The scope of mobile is something that is hard to explain without gaining a base understanding of what we are dealing with - what tools are being built, how early adopters are using those tools and why. That's where this book excels. Chuck lays out the fundamentals in a straight forward, rolling narrative that gains speed, momentum and excitement in the industry as you read.

Need Mobile Intel? Read the Third Screen

Some books capture the spirit of a marketing zeitgeist just as it begins to happen in full force. Seth Godin`s Permission Marketing and Charlene Li & Josh Bernoff's Groundswell were two such books. Chuck Martin's The Third Screen is arguably of the same caliber for the forthcoming mobile marketing revolution.

Centered around the Untethered Consumer -- freed from the bondage of traditional marketing methods -- the book helps marketers capture the true nature of mobile media. It serves as a solid primer, going into the history of wireless communications, and explaining why businesses have so little control over mobile stakeholders. Basically, anytime a customer interacts with a business it is strictly on their terms. It is completely an opt-in experience.

Martin's strength lies in his discussion of mobile platforms. His knowledge of operating systems, application usage, international usage and different types of mobile media (web, apps, texting) is universal.

A pragmatic ongoing conversation in the book includes media usage patterns, and how people interact with their smartphones. Social media wonks maybe disappointed as interaction drops on the "third screen" (the first being TV, and the second is desktop computers). While interactions do occur on the phone, screen size and input methods change a person's interaction with online media.

In addition, Martin uses significant case studies to illustrate his points, including a fantastic Cars.com case study. In the Cars.com case study, Martin details the thorough process the company went through to adapt mobile, including some a great research and listening phase. This case study alone is worth the price of the book, and could be run in Harvard Business Review (the magazine, not the blogs).

The book was written in 2010 so there is little discussion of the now growing tablet boom, though Martin does pick up the topic here and there. Martin does a fantastic job of using market statistics to back up his theories and observations.

Nitpicks include a slow start. The Third Screen`s introduction and first chapter were repetitive, and could stand for some editorial cuts. In addition, the Pepsi Refresh case study was very questionable based on the actual business results.

However, don't let these small items dissuade you. From the perspective of an online marketer and a former wireless reporter, this book was impressive. The Third Screen is a fantastic primer on mobile, and is a must read for any interactive professional.

This is a great way to work through all the key concepts for internal medicine. It doesn't have every detail you need but, for me, it has plenty and I'm more likely to remember the things I do know when they are presented in case format. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the kindle edition doesn't allow you to easily choose which case you'd like to read (no hyperlinks).
