Physics at a glance!

I just want to say that this book is great! Out of all the physics books I bought for my advanced level course this book was the most useful. This book has the essential topics, neatly organized and made simple for a first time reader to understand.

In fact it was only after I learned from this book, I understood the principle of electro-magnetic induction!!!

More over the colorful pictures arouse a mood of interest to at least turn the pages of the book.

I would also say it is worth paying the price for it...

Mountain guide Boukreev tells his version of the events of the May 1996 Mt. Everest disaster, in which five climbers died, in an effort to clear his name of damning allegations made in Jon Krakauer's bestselling Into Thin Air. Boukreev is well known in climbing circles as a good, tough, experienced guide, not especially personable or given to pampering the clients, but utterly reliable, especially in tight situations. So it came as a shock when Krakauer called into question Boukreev's behavior on that fateful day: Why had the guide raced down the mountain before his clients? Was it because he was improperly dressed and climbing without supplemental oxygen? Was it true he ``cut and ran'' when needed most, as charged by a Boukreev client whom Krakauer quotes? Boukreev provides a detailed history of his team's expedition (the book is told as an alternating duet, with Boukreev doing the play-by-play and investigative filmmaker DeWalt handling long swaths of color commentary), of the things that went right on the climb and the many that went wrong, as well as a minute examination of his climbing philosophy. And he successfully parries Krakauer's accusations: He was appropriately dressed and has photos to prove it; he climbs without supplemental oxygen because he feels it makes him stronger, not weaker, especially in situations where oxygen runs out; and, indeed, oxygen was fast running out for his clients, which is why he hurried down, with the consent of his team's leader, to be prepared to ferry tanks back up if needed. Not that the book is without its own glitches, such as inconsistency (``You can receive a lot more information observing the clients' external appearance'' and ``Appearances meant nothing''). A great book detailing the Mountain Madness side of the 1996 Tragedy

After watching the 2015 Everest film I became a sponge for all things about the 1996 Everest tragedy watching 4 documentaries, reading Jon Krakauer and Lou Kasischke's books. Just finished The Climb (TC) a few hours ago and loved it.

For those who do not know this book discuses the 1996 tragedy on Everest that befell two climbing teams. Krakauer's book (into thin air [ITA]) is usually regarded by the public as the main source of what happened on the mountain. In that book Krakauer was critical to Anatoli who then released this book to defend himself and his actions (by not using supplemental oxygen and for descending the mountain rapidly before the team). I felt bad that Anatoli got a bad wrap for 1996 when he risked his own life several times to save other climbers.

This is a great read for any Everest junkies and is really the only main book that shows what happened on the Mountain Madness team (Krakauer and Lou's books are from the other teams POV). The book offers some really good insight into Scott Fischer and the other MM climbers. IMHO it also clearly explain why Anatoli did not use supplemental oxygen as well as why he did a rapid descent.

The first 60% of the book covers 1996. The next chapter details his next expedition back up Everest and how he made make-shift graves for Scott and Yasuko Namba as well as took their small effects to give back to their families. Classy move imho.

The last 30% of the book is a group transcript of the MM group discussing the tragedy shortly after it happened and is a great read.

I am not going to get into who is right or wrong and will let you decide for yourself. All I will say is that this is a great read and if you read Krakauer's book you are only getting 1 side of the story. imo all three books should be read as they are all great reads but also from three distinct POVs.

A very interesting read

I'm not `into' climbing books but I do enjoy reading tales of humans striving against the odds. Having read Jon Krakauers book Into Thin Air about the unfortunate events of the 1996 climbing season on Everest it seemed appropriate to read the account of the same climb by Anatoli Boukreev (written with G. Weston DeWalt).

Those in the know will understand that Krakauer was quite damning of Boukreevs decisions on the climb that saw several deaths amongst climbers and several others permanently damaged by frostbite. This book is in many ways Boukreevs right of reply. Hence it's a book you really should read if you've read Krakauers account to which I'll take the liberty of comparing it to directly for much of this review given they seem somehow intertwined.

As to the book itself: The writing style is not as breezy as the Krakauer work. That books writing style is breezy and easily digested. The Climb on the other hand comes across as more stilted. Now I don't blame Boukreev for that, after all he would have been a native Russian speaker presumably and his real talent seems to have been as a great mountaineer - one of the finest of his generation in fact. So no, it is DeWalt that must bear the brunt of my criticism of pointing out how the book does not flow and demands a more indulgent reader.

The Climb assists the reader with a few useful maps and a clutch of photos that tend to humanise things somewhat. And similarly to the Krakauer book there is plenty of praise for the commitment, bravery and tenacity of many of the members of the various expeditions. There is also a heck of a lot of respect for the simple fact that there is so little margin for error or ill luck in the extreme areas of the planet.

On the other side of the ledger The Climb does enunciate rather well an alternate telling of the events of 1996 and does greatly allow for the reader to get a fuller understanding of some of the issues facing the expedition and the way things unravelled so tragically. The book goes into the thinking of Boukreev who was obviously one of the fittest and most important members of either the Fischer or Hall teams and certainly a man of great bravery and whatever your view of some of his decisions (after reading both books) several people must owe their lives to a quietly stoic and very self contained man who while perhaps not a `people person' took his duties seriously as a matter of personal honour.

One aspect of this work I didn't like was the long epilogue discussing the ongoing feud between Krakauers and Boukreevs telling of events. Boukreev himself succumbed to an avalanche while climbing in Nepal on Christmas Day, 1997. One the one hand his passing should have caused Krakauer to `pull his head in' as we say in Australia, but despite his protestations that it was his duty to do continue to repudiate things Krakauer was saying I couldn't help feeling there was some unsavoury grandstanding going on.

I would heartily recommend anyone who has an interest in climbing works but particularly anybody who has read Into Thin Air. Despite the stilted writing and the long addendum at the end I felt I had a far more rounded understanding of what was at the end of the day a tragic event that showed the power of nature but also the power of the humans contending with it.

Conclusive work, as Anatoli is no longer among us. Gives a magnificent inside view on what it takes to be a high altitude climber that lives to tell the story. G. Weston DeWalt has done a great job here as the (co)writer. The total enterprise from preparations to leaving the site is covered. You do not have to be a mountaineer to be able to read this book, it is all clarified and all points are covered to secure that it would be a clear and gripping story. This is a book to read and re-read. There are but a few books that I keep over mountaineering, this is one. Great read!

You're getting ready to become a radiation protection technician. It would be good if there were a set of flashcards to study for this exam. Well, there is. This set of flashcards is designed to help those preparing to take the NRRPT exam.

Don't let the amount of flashcards in this system scare you. More cards mean more knowledge for you to absorb in your brain, and that's better than absorbing radiation rays, right? Well, don't get flustered, these flashcards are all about surveys and inspections. You will cover all the bases for getting accurate readings and making sure specs are in order. The flashcards use prompting words like name, give, tell, define and describe to give you an idea of how you should answer certain questions.

There is a lot of information to cover, so dig right in. Some questions or scenarios have two and three-part solutions. Numbers or bullet points divide these solutions or answers. There is additional room to write on each card if need be.

It will serve the studier well to use this set along with the corresponding study guide as it breaks down the survey and inspection components. If you took good notes with the study guide, they will really serve you well when reviewing these flashcards.

Flash cards help in every way

These flash cards are perfect study tools for this test. They can help in a number of ways. First, they have all of the details on them that will be covered on the test. So you don’t have to search around for the information you need to study. You just need these cards and that’s that! Second, they’re small and portable so you can take them anywhere. You can sit down and study them for hours, or you can take them with you and get in a few minutes here and there. You can’t always do that with your clunky books and notes so having the cards handy is really helpful. And third, they’re in question and answer format so they help you feel like you are taking the test even when you are just studying.

About the Author
Bruce Jacob is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his Ars Baccalaureate, cum laude, in Mathematics from Harvard University in 1988, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1995 and 1997, respectively. In addition to his academic credentials, he has extensive experience in industry: he designed real-time embedded applications and real-time embedded architectures in the area of telecommunications for two successful Boston-area startup companies, Boston Technology (now part of Comverse Technology) and Priority Call Management (now part of uReach Technologies). At Priority Call Management he was employee number 2, the system architect, and the chief engineer; he built the first working prototype of the company’s product, and he built and installed the first actual product as well.

Spencer Ng is a senior technical staff member with Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. Prior to that, he was a research staff member with IBM Almaden Research Center. Before joining IBM, he was a member of technical staff with Bell Labs in Naperville, Illinois. He has been a researcher in the field of storage for over twenty years, and is the holder of about twenty issued U.S. patents. For the past fifteen years, he is heavily involved in studying and developing various techniques for improving disk drive performance.

David Wang received his PhD from the University of Maryland in 2005. David's primary research interest is into power efficient, high performance memory systems that use commodity DRAM devices. As part of his research, David has collaborated with memory system architects and design engineers, and presented his work to JEDEC in support of proposals for future generation DRAM device specifications. David is presently working as an architect for MetaRAM, a memory systems startup in the Silicon Valley.

Overall Memory Coverage

This book is an excellent source that covers system, component and architectures of memory systems and how the total computer memory system is put together into a working system. The coverage of the material is up to date and addresses the critical issues that are facing the present and next generation memory systems being implemented and designed today. The book was well written and is a great source for engineering students and even to a degree non-engineering people. For me, a seasoned engineer, that is relatively new to memory systems, is has been a great source in helping me understand the overall system and how it all works. It also addresses some of the major engineering issues facing todays design that I am presently working on and covers the details of the components to give a good overall understanding of how it all fits together. An excellent overall source to have on hand for any engineer working on memory systems

Brilliant!

I purchased this book looking for the details of the inner workings of hard disk drive technology, and to my surprise, the book has overcome all my expectatives. Clear explanations, precise language, and a technical detail that it is hard to find on similar books. It is clear to me that the authors know "a little" about what they are writing about ... 100% recommendable.

Incredibly detailed

Great detail in every section but so well written that it is easy to follow. And quite engaging (if you're into this kind of stuff I guess)

The only negative is that SSDs aren't covered but since it was published in 2007, what can you do? If they put out an update that includes SSDs, it would be worth buying again...

Try to articulate some of the unspoken rules you grew up with. Take your time to think it over. These unspoken rules are generally so ingrained that we are rarely aware of them. Once both of you have articulated your "personal ten commandments," share them with each other. Are there rules you would like to change? Finally, compare your list with your wife’s list and discuss the results. Put your final decision of who will do what in the last column, and be prepared to renegotiate when your circumstances change. This exercise will take about thirty minutes.

Easy read w/ valid points//Excerts are from Workbook

First off, the excerpts (table of contents, page and backcover) above are from the workbook, not the book.
The book was a very easy and quick read. I have suggested it to a number of friends as I feel it brings up some valid points and can be used as a spring board to further discussion. Too many people marry without talking about what they are getting into and expecting. The book talks about the myths of marriage, the ebb and flow of relationships, expectations, and ends with a discussion on faith and religion in marriage. That is in the last chapter and can be skipped if you are not religeous and/or shy away from "Christian" stuff. The rest of the book only touches on faith as it relates to the authors description of an event.
The book was written in '95 and mentions much of the relationship self help stuff from that era. The authors are married, and they give examples from thier own marriage, as well as from other couples they have counseled. There are out-quotes, places to pause for discussion, and a few diagrams.
As someone else mentioned, the book does make you feel as if you have to get the workbooks to get a complete picture. You don't. I thought they were overpriced for what they are, although they too can help in discussion, especially if you aren't doing any other than what color flowers to get and what kind of limo you want. The excercises range from really simple ratings (on a scale of 1 to 5, how improtant is the following to you, do alone and compare and discuss) to more time consuming stuff (what unwritten rules do you have?). I found out in one excercie that my honey expects me to do 80% of the childrearing, while I expected we'd be closer to 60/40.
Part of it is intuitive stuff, part of it is stuff that you might think, "I hadn't thought of it that way". If you're reading about this book, congrats and Good luck!

This book was recommended to us by several friends and my mother, so we bought and read it. I would have been happier had I borrowed it from the library and not spent the money. It has some good common-sense suggestions to keep a relationship working, but nothing earth-shattering. The only things I found really helpful were the triangular model of relationships and the chapter on ebb and flow. Other than that, if you've taken Psychology 101 this book has nothing new for you. Also, I was very disappointed in the workbooks. The book makes you feel like you are missing out if you don't stop every few paragraphs to do an exercise in the workbook, but the workbook is exceptionally lame and consists mostly of empty lines and questions that are obvious to the reader anyway-- definitely not worth $14 extra. If you want a really fantastic marriage book, try "I Pledge You My Troth" by James Olthuis, if you can find it.

An excellent counseling tool for dating or engaged couples!

This workbook, along with the main book, are excellent counseling tools for couples engaged or considering marriage. It is also excellent for couples that are already married. It is professionally done, and includes many exercises that help couples communicate their expectations about marriage and eliminate some problems before they begin. It is well worth the money.

Additionally, as recent policy makers and scholars have tried to make the Just War criteria legalistic, they have weakened the tradition’s ability to draw from and adjust to its contemporaneous setting.

The essays in The Future of Just War seek to reorient the tradition around its core concerns of preventing the unjust use of force by states and limiting the harm inflicted on vulnerable populations such as civilian noncombatants. The pursuit of these challenges involves both a reclaiming of traditional Just War principles from those who would push it toward greater permissiveness with respect to war, as well as the application of Just War principles to emerging issues, such as the growing use of robotics in war or the privatization of force. These essays share a commitment to the idea that the tradition is more about a rigorous application of Just War principles than the satisfaction of a checklist of criteria to be met before waging “just” war in the service of national interest.
