At the age of 16, she entered a convent where she trained as a nurse, and was sent to India to look after the elderly (and knew Mother Teresa). Here, she felt it was the young, rather than the old, who needed more help and so she left her order and trained in midwifery. Later, in Paris, she was asked to nurse the Duke of Windsor just before he died - and many years later was introduced to Princess Diana and became her weekly confidante. In between, were bouts of serious illness, studying acupuncture in China - and being photographed by Snowdon. The Voice of Silence is the life story of a very unusual woman who has learned far more than most from all the remarkable things that have happened to her. It is also the author's thoughts on healing, spirituality and love - and how closely the three are intertwined. Full of feeling, poetic vision and insight, this book cannot fail to touch the heart of the reader, and inspire.

About the Author
Oonagh Shanley-Toffolo was brought up in Co Leitrim, Ireland, and later trained as a nurse in Dublin. During her two decades as a nun, she served the poor in both France and India. After leaving her order, she continued her nursing career in London and Paris. In 1981 she became one of the first Western women to learn acupuncture in China, following the end of the Cultural Revolution. She has known - and looked after - the two black sheep of the British royal family (Princess Diana and the Duke of Windsor), and also had to come to terms with long periods of serious illness herself. Along the way, she has learned much of great value to pass on to us all. She lives in London.

Good non-technical encyclopedia. Easy to read. Trusted known scholars. Could be stronger with more documentation. I have a Biblical Studies degree and bought these for my son who is becoming more of a student of the Bible without college studies. I bought original edition (1997) in four volumes for myself years ago. This current edition is handier in a two-volume edition. This may be the best "lay person" Biblical encyclopedia resource that I know. I recommend these to anyone wanting to have a handy help for understanding the Bible.

I'm a big Allan Aldiss fan, but this book was just plain boring. Page after page of harem slaves being pout through their paces, details of how they were tied in a coffle, chained here and there, made to eat off the ground ... You get the idea.

Very little real erotica, unless you're so into bondage that you want to know every miniscule detail of someone's fastening to the girl next to her.

I thought this would, at least, be a good story about the Barbary pirates, their involvement with England and France, how the rulers of the Barbary states maintained their powerbase, etc. But it got so bogged down in the details of how the slaves were posed, chained, and exercised that the plot was [almost] lost in the uninteresting trivia.

Allan Aldiss is one of the best in bdsm books on Harem and slavery. His writing is very good and with such class, it gives class to the subject matter he writes about, harem and slavery. From beginning to end, he goes into intricate details about harem, slaves, and their Masters. For anyone into harem and slave bdsm, his books are a veritable delight. Few can outdo him on that.

Viking Raid is perfect for everyone from ordinary seaman to shipping industry tycoon to someone who just wants to a good weekend read. This riveting international maritime story has incredibly insightful information about shipping finance along the way, and I'm eagerly waiting the possible next installment of the Robert Fairchild series.

Rather good book, semi-plausible script and characters (for those in the know of how things are happening in this particular sector). The previous book of the same author was better, so perhaps the next one for the profligate daughter or daughters of the most prominent shipowner in the world (any connection to Mr. John Fredriksen's family might be coincidental) might be better also.
