Peter Flom has nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD or NVLD). He was the first student at the Gateway School in New York City and has an MA in special education and a PhD in psychometrics. He has given talks about NLD at various organizations and is active on several sites about learning disabilities.

Outstanding

Peter Flom writes: “It is so hard to explain our difficulties” — the difficulties of people with nonverbal learning disability — but he does so brilliantly and compellingly in Screwed Up Somehow but Not Stupid. And after a vivid description of his life and the problems faced by others like him, he gives a detailed panorama of ways to help. This is a terrific book: honest and optimistic, and propelled by hope and good will.

Dr Flom has written poignantly about his experiences as a well-able person with learning disabilties. This is a must read for every parent, practitioner, and person who has ever worked with, existed as, or desires to support a person with learning disabilities.

NLD from the “horse’s mouth”

After retiring at 63 years of age from a career as an Electronic Engineer I did some research on my lifelong weaknesses. I discovered I had a Nonverbal Learning Disability (NLD). Having NLD meant that although I was very good at challenging and creative tasks I couldn’t easily do things that most people take for granted like folding paper.

This book is written by Dr. Peter Flom who is also someone that has NLD. It is the author’s life experiences with NLD. I was amazed at how similar Dr. Flom’s NLD life is to mine. Reading this book expressed so much of what my life was and still is.

In addition to describing how NLD manifested itself in the author’s life the book also gives practical advice for someone with NLD and also for someone that has to deal with a person with NLD, like a parent, spouse or teacher etc. There are many books about NLD written by the likes of therapists and other “experts” but this book comes straight from the “horse’s mouth” so to speak.

The book deals with the whole lifespan from childhood, to school and into adulthood. The writing is very clear and is an easy and interesting read. I think it is the perfect book for anyone that really wants to understand NLD or just for a genuinely out of the ordinary read.

Drama, Comedy, Romance and even a bit of Mystery!

Dollycas's Thoughts

Alison Sweeney takes us behind the scenes into the life of a very successful Hollywood publicist and we find her days could be featured on any daytime drama. Being tempted by a new actor she is supposed to be representing could ruin everything she has worked years to obtain.

Sweeney writes what she knows. She has worked on Days of Our Lives for 20 years and knows the job of a publicist as she has probably worked with more than a few herself. I have a hard time accepting this is her first foray into the world of fiction publishing. I hope it is the first of many! The story flows perfectly and she has created a leading lady readers will love. We also get wrapped up so easily in the romantic triangle. I was glad I didn't have to choose which man she would spend her life with.

Sophie Atwater is a 31 year old publicist headed for the top. She is addicted to her Blackberry and she calls herself a "glorified babysitter". That's what her job is - holding the client's hands and keeping them out of trouble. She is on the red-carpet, at fundraisers and sitting in on interviews. She is far from the perfect woman she strives to be and truthfully can be quite a klutz, especially when Billy Fox is around. Her mishaps will have you absolutely laughing out loud.

This debut has it all drama, comedy, romance and even a bit of mystery. A fun-tastic read! It is the book you will see everyone reading this summer at the beach! The Star Attraction

Awesome beach read!

Alison shows that she's learned about writing good characters, drama and romance during her years on Days. The Star Attraction is a fun insiders glimpse into Hollywood. I kept wondering if she was basing Billy Fox on someone from her show or just her imagination. If you like romance (that isn't cheesy or overtly graphic), soap operas or just a good storytelling, you'll love this book.

Perfect Summer Read!

This isn't the sort of book I usually pick up, but I found it charming and completely addictive. I couldn't put it down, read it in two sittings. Ms. Sweeney has a good feel for storytelling and character and a plot for a few twists. She also has a sharp wit, a clear eye and a good sense of fun... And it's no small feat that in the middle of this Hollywood fairy tale she managed to create authentic characters that readers will recognize, relate to and root for. It's an engaging read, all around -- if you want a little summer escape with a heroine you will love, this one's for you.

An Alternative to "Extract and Pull Them Back" Orthodontics

I received extractions, braces and headgear to "correct" an apparent overbite in my teens by a University of Minnesota trained Orthodontist. When I was in my late 30's I developed extreme jaw pain. I visited a dentist in Ohio who showed me his mouth. He had had two teeth extracted on each side and had his teeth pulled way back and now had chronic jaw pain. He put braces back on me and tried to "open up" my bite. My jaw was clicking and popping. My jaw stops clicking when my jaw moves forward the width of the teeth they extracted on the top.
After three years of treatment also by Dr Spahl I can chew again and only have occasional pain. I went back to the U of M- they said I had been treated properly the first time, and the clicking and popping were harmless.
Anyhow this work needs to be out there, and if your jaw function is fine do not ruin it with extractions and do not sign any TMJ waivers. More dentists should read what Spahl/Witzig have to say here. Some day conventional orthodonics will be revealed like using xrays for acne- permanent cosmetic surgery where the treatment is worst than the disease.

A Voice for OCD Sufferers

The power of the story was brought home to the psychological community with the analysis of the stories of psychiatrist Milton H. Erickson in the beginnings of the family therapy movement Uncommon Therapy: The Psychiatric Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D. and the return of hypnosis to psychological favor My Voice Will Go with You: The Teaching Tales of Milton H. Erickson. Allen Weg's book solidly brings examples of the storytelling method to the cognitive behavioral community with stories that have the power to help patients who struggle with thoughts and behaviors that have seriously compromised their quality of life. Dr. Weg in a clean,crisp manner tells each teaching story and then describes what lessons can then emerge from it. His story of the "Bee Trap" is in itself worth the book purchase since it is a powerful metaphor and allows many teaching tales to evolve from it. As an aside, while on the train reading the book, the woman who had sat down next to me started reading it over my shoulder. She commented, "Wow that is so interesting, what is its title?" Of course I told her. My only disappointment with the book is that Dr. Weg only speaks of OCD treatment as desensitization of thoughts and behaviors in exposure or flooding perspectives so many of his stories are designed to get the patient to engage in treatment that he himself labels as sometimes bizarre and as I may add sometimes dependent on ill conceived processes. I would have preferred he'd added some discussion of other possible therapies to blend with his stories such as hypnosis, EMDR and the thought field therapies. Nevertheless, I recommend this book as a valuable tool for therapists to add to their therapeutic tools and to the public to help those struggling with OCD to get a firmer handle as to what it is they struggle.

Kerry Egan’s ON LIVING is exactly what the title says, a memoir about how to live. While she is a chaplain and works with people who are typically in hospice care and leaving this world, in this magnificent book, she shares incredibly moving stories from patients who made an impression on her, whose words prompted her to talk about, not how you can die gracefully, but how you can live meaningfully.

This is a book for everyone. Whether you have lost someone important to you or not, this book explains the virtues of not waiting for that last breath you are going to take and telling those you love what you wanted to say when you should have said it, not trying to say you’re sorry to someone whose health is failing when it is too late, and learning the power of forgiveness, which Egan says to do second, “while there is still time to do the actual work that’s involved in seeking and granting forgiveness and arriving at some reconciliation.”

The stories that she shares are vastly different as are the people with whom she spent time with. Egan also opens up about a very difficult time that she went through, which allowed her to see things from another perspective, not just as the chaplain providing comfort but wishing that she had someone to console her, understand what she had gone through.

An important message that Egan is trying to convey is that dying people are just like us, “they just happen to be doing something we’ve never done. To die is a verb, like to jump, to eat, or to laugh. It’s something people do, not who they are.”

ON LIVING is comforting, it is a shining light, it is the grandparent’s words that you heard when you were too young to appreciate them, it is the sage whispers that remind you, this is how I want to live.

An urgency for life

On Living is Kerry Egan’s recounting of stories told to her by hospice patients during her years as a chaplain. I found it readable and engaging in relating the wisdom and healing Ms Egan found from listening to what people with little time left had to say. Their stories are sometimes heart-rending, sometimes tragic, sometimes funny, but never morbid. While it will make the open-minded reader think about confronting death, this book, as the title indicates, is really about confronting life.

Ms Egan is unflinchingly honest in relating the experiences of her patients and of her work trying to help them. She shows us people struggling to cope with incapacity and life’s impending end. She also shows us her brush with psychosis that prompted her hospice work. These dark passages are balanced, however, with commentary informed by her Harvard Divinity School education and the enlightenment she takes from her patients’ tales. Indeed, her knack for squeezing meaning from experience infused her first book, Fumbling (her story of hiking the 500 mile Camino de Santiago in northern Spain), and kept me reading this one.

Though it concerns dying, On Living does not dwell on death. It shows those who are dying as carrying on, as well as they can, to their last day. Many take comfort from religion, but some don’t. Very often, their concerns are mostly for those they will leave behind. Where they are different from people not in a hospice, Ms Egan tells us, is that they know their time is short. So all they do and say takes on an urgency that we should mark.

Ms Egan’s chapters are essays on themes relating to the experiences of one or more patients. She tells the dying person’s story and relates it to her own life. Very often, she makes a quick identification with a patient’s views. For instance, when one impressed upon her that since life is all shades of gray, we shouldn’t get hung up on rules. Following that maxim led to her being reprimanded for bending her job’s rules. While some might judge her unfavorably for such an episode, I see in it an intellectual honesty and empathy that must make her a great chaplain. It certainly makes her a compelling writer.

There are also in this book (as in Fumbling) paranormal highlights. I think they enhance the subject matter. They are described in her incidents with the “medicine woman” and with her “guardian angel.” Such passages are powerful because they come from someone not given to supernatural themes. They don’t detract from her central purpose but rather support it and emphasize life’s wonder. Such wonder is, perhaps, more readily seen when dealing with distress, such as dying.

Ms Egan says:

"There’s nothing stopping you from acting with the same urgency the dying feel."

Feeling that urgency is, I think, this book’s central message. Such feeling creeps upon us as we grow older, if we’re honest with ourselves. We can dread it or let it spur us to a greater appreciation of life. This theme leavens the stories and central narrative of On Living and makes it a worthy resource for inspiration and personal growth.

There is a continuum in Ms Egan’s two books. From Fumbling to On Living, we see the maturation of the young Camino pilgrim into the experienced, enlightened, hospice chaplain. Even so, the young seeker is still there, searching out the truth of life in her daily pilgrimage with a desire to share her insights with the world.

I highly recommend On Living as an inspirational and thoughtful read. Don’t let the hospice stories aspect put you off. The book’s title accurately describes its theme; this is not a funeral dirge. I do suggest, though, that you read Fumbling as well, so as to appreciate Ms Egan’s personal evolution.

The stories in this book remind us that we’re all facing certain death. You can take that as morbid, or let it prompt you to act with an urgency for life.

Great book and a quick read. I was expecting a book about working as a hospice chaplain to be potentially dark. But to the contrary, it was full of love, kindness, and warmth. I can see why Elizabeth Gilbert recommended - it's good for the soul.
