Decent Introduction
By Richard J Breiten
The book begins with a nice overview of the concepts to be covered. I appreciate the author begins with very basic, introductory aspects of Masonry and builds on those concepts as the chapters progress to fairly complex and complicated environments. One thing I was especially appreciative is the coverage of using Masonry with both Drupal and Wordpress. While the coverage is fairly basic, the fact that both were covered in some detail helps provide enough to go on for basic integration.

While the book is very brief in duration, the information provided isn't a bad introduction to the topic of Masonry. Following along with the available downloadable code aids in establishing the foundations for using Masonry. While this won't make you an expert by any means, this brief, easy-to-read crash course in Masonry does lay the groundwork for continuing on in proficiency of Masonry.

None of the more complex, dynamically-assigned data are all that great. While the image "chapter" does include information on using image elements, the information is already known ahead of time, much different from starting from scratch and filling dynamically as time goes on. Also, the dynamic content using the automatically generated "lorem ipsum" text using placeholder.js, while decent in explanation, doesn't really address how this would be used in dynamically-loaded content in the real world.

If you have some jQuery, HTML, and CSS experience and wish to learn more about Masonry, this book has been a great introduction. Even with the shortcomings, this is a very concise, well-written introduction to Masonry. While this won't make you a master of it by any means, the foundation steps are there to begin learning and tinkering for more dynamic situations as well as more advanced uses. Good introduction given its brevity, but
By Antonio Elena Batllo
I was invited by Packt Publishing to read and review the book, a part of their instant series that purport to introduce new things to readers in a short, concise basis, enough to get you started in a topic of your interest.

The book reads more like a cookbook on jquery masonry, - which in case you don't know is one of the available libraries out there for arraging items on screen in a similar way to pinterest - offering a series of recipes, starting with the simplest layouts, single and multi-column and going on to mixed media configurations (images, text and video) and integrations with popular engines such as wordpress or drupal.

The book reads like a breeze and the examples are easy enough to follow, but I found the book a bit lacking this time, as compared to other offerings in the same series from the same publisher. It would have been nice if the book included an example of creating and loading image elements dynamically in ajax requests, because some tricks lurk there. The example of working with images that we get in the book ("using masonry with images") falls a bit short since it is all a simple example with image elements known before-hand, which of course makes the library very very easy to work with, but it's a different scenario to starting with a blank page and filling it dynamically.

There's indeed an example of loading dynamic content but it's just text via placeholder.js (that generates "lorem ipsum"-like text), but not a real ajax call, plus the example starts with a series of fixed items, which is different from having all the content dynamically loaded (which means masonry does not have a clue as to the size of items).

For me that would've topped it, and without it the book feels a bit too short. The key to almost all issues with Masonry is reloading, and this is much easier said than done, especially when loading in iframes, embedded content or content from a third-party script". That's why maybe 5 or 6 more pages with covering really dynamic stuff would have been a nice way to finish this instant guide.

Other than that, the book is a very decent introduction to Masonry, adequate to get you started with several scenarios. Given the fact that the book is really short, this is more than adequate.
