Exposed, by Shannon Deitz

EXPOSED is a true modern day love story between God and a girl and the enemy who wants to tear them apart.
Raped at seventeen and then again as a freshman in college, Shannon Deitz felt completely bypassed by love. Rebelling against the violent attacks on her body and struggling to quiet the pain through self–abuse, her feelings of worthlessness eventually became so palpable she could not fathom how anyone – most especially God – could love her. This only caused her to push deeper into her own torment.
Shannon Deitz spent nearly two decades of her life in the darkest valleys of self–destruction, believing she was unworthy of God's love. After witnessing as a child the sex and drug–induced downfall of her older sister, Shannon turned away from her Catholic faith and upbringing and found herself caught in a wild and carefree lifestyle. She drank, partied, and sought comfort in abusive relationships, only to be raped not once but twice–by two different men.
"I endured countless, inexcusable trials walking further and further way from the embrace of Christ because I felt too unworthy to look back," Deitz recounts. "And worse, I didn't want to be like them, those who were self–righteous...holier than thou. I liked me." At least she thought she did.

Then, at the age of 27, unable to fight the battle raging inside her any longer, she gave it all up. Face down on her bedroom floor with her life in shambles all around her, Deitz surrendered every aspect of her being to God. She gave up the self–judgment, the condemnation, the need to be better. She let it all go. And in that moment she finally understood the truth–that her life had never belonged to her. It had always belonged to God.
Exposed: Inexcusable Me . . . Irreplaceable Him is one woman's courageous journey down the path of spiritual self–discovery. Not only does this book expose the awful truths of physical and emotional abuse, but it also exposes the truth that, no matter how deeply our wounds may run, we will always be worthy of God's healing grace.
This book offers faith–based encouragement for teenagers and adults who have suffered physical or emotional abuse. Through the extremely personal, no–holds–barred account of one woman's journey down a self–destructive path, it addresses such issues as spiritual warfare, the need to be loved, and the need to relinquish control of one's self to God.

"It took great courage for Shannon to share her story. It is an important one for young people who are struggling with addiction or abuse and those who question whether God still cares for them."

C.A. Webb, President of Conversations Book Club, Host of Conversations Live!
"A powerful book that helps us to live a life that is open to receive all that is meant for us."

"Shannon's candid sharing will prove to be a blessing to victims and those that care about them."

About the Author
Shannon Deitz is a woman in love with God and excited about her faith. But it wasn't always that way. For nearly two decades Shannon spent her life in the darkest valleys of self–destruction, believing she was unworthy of God's love. At the age of 27, Shannon found herself at rock bottom, where she finally understood the truth – that her life had never belonged to her. It had always belonged to God. It was the beginning of a love story that has grown more beautiful with each passing day. From that point she did as God called her to do and for twelve years ministered to teens as a youth minster and spoke to thousands of teens and young adults at conferences all over the world. Her ministry is now offering hope to women and men of all ages.

Shannon is an international speaker on faith issues and surviving abuse, founder of Hopeful Hearts Ministry, and spokesperson for the Maria Goretti Network, a non–profit self–help abuse survivor support group. Her memoir, EXPOSED: Inexcusable Me...Irreplaceable Him, debuted in 2010 and was voted runner up for the 2011 About.com Reader's Choice Award. Shannon and her husband, Neal, live in Kingwood, Texas, where they are active in their local parish and community. Their two sons, Ryan and Seth, provide them with endless joy and reason to continually count their blessings. For more information on the book and her ministry visit www.hopefulheartsministry.com

Could not put it down!!!
By Jennifer Tomotaki
Wow, this book grabbed me from the very beginning. It's a quick read that I just could not put down, and I keep picking it back up again even after I'd already finished it!

I easily identified with the first half of the book. I love first-person narratives where the author isn't just some person off the street who wrote a book, but where it's like I am really the "I" in the book. EXPOSED captured this sensation perfectly for me.

I confess that I struggled a little bit with later parts of the book. I couldn't identify quite as easily, and I even felt a little bit left out - maybe because I feel like God hasn't had such an obvious influence in my day-to-day life. I felt challenged to examine different areas of my own life. I came to question what love is, what sex has to do with it, what choices I've made in my own life, and what ways I have been victimized. My eyes opened a little bit wider to see where I still struggle and where I have recovered. I feel like I am blessed to experience God in a more tangible way, and I see the battles around me where I must strive to do good and not give in to what might be evil.

Reading EXPOSED also has led me to question where God has been in each stage of my own life, from childhood through my teens and college years and now into adulthood. I've always heard God, but not always listened. My experience with EXPOSED has urged me further along the path of healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

I love how the author demonstrates the impact of several forms of abuse through an engaging, first hand account of the very struggles that so many of us face during our formative years. I will urge all of my friends, and especially my nieces, to read this book and to discuss its impact upon them with someone they trust.

This is a must-read book of positive Christian influence that doesn't stuff religion down your throat. I am eager to see other reviews and hear the effect EXPOSED has had upon you personally. I am even more eager to seek out additional writings by this author. Highly recommend it!!!

An Important Message for all Young Women
By Gwen
This book is a cautionary tale for all young women and men. Through her own traumatic experiences, Shannon portrays the brutal aftermath of date rape. The trauma of sexual abuse causes scars that don't go away, but with some divine intervention,
Shannon is able to demonstrate that it doesn't have to define who you are and you can find peace again. She candidly shares her experience to reinforce that "NO MEANS NO" so men can clearly see the consequences of their actions and women can be assured that if they said "no," it is rape, it is not your fault, and it should be reported immediately.

Inspiring
By Michelle Pozzi
If you have never had the opportunity to listen to Ms.Deitz in person speak of her journey then you are truly missing out. Exposed touches on some subjects that many people would rather not discuss but the message needs to be heard. Thousands of woman have either led or are leading lives similar to Ms. Deitz and she so eloquently reminds us that there is hope, forgiveness, and redemtion (in self and in faith). I would recommend this book to teenagers and adults alike.
