About the Author
Dr Espen Gaarder Haug has more than 15 years of experience in Derivatives research and trading, and has worked for more than 20 years as a trader. Until recently he worked as a proprietary trader in J.P. Morgan New York, and as a derivatives trader for two multi-billion dollar hedge funds; Amaranth Investor and Paloma Partners, located in Greenwich Connecticut. Before that he worked for Tempus Financial Engineering, Chase Manhattan Bank (now J.P. Morgan Chase) and Den Norske Bank.

He is the author of The Complete Guide of Option Pricing Formulas, which has become a reference manual among Wall Street professionals. He has a PhD from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology where he specialized in Option Valuation and Trading and has published extensively in practitioner and academic journals. He is currently considering setting up his own investment company - possibly the first Anti-Hedge fund!

Excellence in Options Trading

I recently purchased this book due to my positive impression from Haug's other excellent book on option formulas. For those who enjoy the history of ideas and would like to find out what is state of the art in options theory and options trading today, there is no better source than Haug's new book "Derivatives: Models on Models"

I recommend this book for everyone - experts and neophytes alike.

What a weird book!

"Models on Models" contains a number of verbatim interviews with most of the big names in quantitative finance. Emanuel Derman's interview stands out. In addition the book contains some out-of-place technical articles on selected quanty topics most of which have been taken from the author's previous published work. Some light-hearted work on trying to unify Special Relativity with Quantitative Finance and even some full-colour glossy Collector comics are included. This mix gives the book a personality crisis. As a result I really struggled to read through the book. It is not the book for someone who wants to get better in quant finance. Yet the book has some benefit in that the interviews helps you better understand who is behind the name. The interview concept is also not original - see How I Became a Quant: Insights from 25 of Wall Street's Elite. All in all the contents of the book gives you a "nice-to-know" feeling and not a "needed-to-know" satisfaction.

his is not my ordinary book review. These are good books that will only appeal to a small fraction of my readers, because few will have need for the knowledge. Both are written by Espen Gaarder Haug, who is kind of a character. He collects option pricing formulas the way some people collect Barbie Dolls, Beanie Babies, or Baseball Cards. He has interacted with some of the brightest minds in the field, and collaborated with a few of them. In both books the math is significant -- it would help if your calculus was sharp, and for any value some algebraic knowledge is needed.

Let's start with the more esoteric of the two books, The Complete Guide To Option Pricing Formulas. Almost every option formula is included there, together with ways of estimating volatility, certain statistical techniques, aspects of compound interest math, etc. The book is very comprehensive, and for those that need how to estimate the value of standard and non-standard options, it is a good book to keep on hand as a reference, together with the free CD-ROM containing an Excel add-in that allows you to use the formulas inside Excel. I have used them for some of the insurance companies I have worked for; the software was easy and reliable.

The second book Derivatives, Models on Models, is different. He interviews 15 significant thinkers on options and derivatives, and presents 15 papers by them. Most of them contain tough math; some I couldn't understand. The real value of the book was in the interviews, where many of the interviewees showed significant knowledge of the limitations of their models, and how derivatives were misunderstood by the public, or by their users.

There are quirky aspects to this book, including cartoons and photos that are somewhat self-aggrandizing to the author, but make the point in a humorous way. I liked both books, but only a modest fraction of my readers should have any interest here.

Having mentally taken the first step which was accepting the fact that our ears play just as big a role in brand building as our eyes do (as Nokia and T-Mobile are proving a million times every day), the case that John Groves makes for Sound Branding becomes a no-brainer. The book also makes it clear that we, the marketers, have to ask ourselves a potentially embarrassing question: how it is possible to have overlooked such a vital part of our responsibilities for such a long time? Groves nimbly invites the reader to convince himself of the significance of sound and music for marketing before he plausibly demonstrates what it takes to develop one s own Brand Sound Identity. Those of us who have ever tried to verbally describe taste or a colour will be pleasantly surprised how easily and playfully the author manages to plant sounds in the reader s head. I can recommend comMUSICation to everyone working in the media or music business. It examines the issue "Music and Sound for Brands and Media" from different angles and provides you with valuable insights about the effect music has on us - from a neurological, psychological and marketing point of view. comMUSICation is a specialist book but as it is written in an easy to understand, popular sciences style, it doesn't give you a hard time reading. I really enjoyed the anecdotes and Mr Groves' British humor.

Make your life and leadership stand out from the crowd

Ordinary. Plain. Generic. Non-descript. Boring. According to Richard S. Lytle in Abandon The Ordinary, these words should never be the descriptors for those who want to create a distinctive brand of leadership for their business, family, or church. And they should never, ever be used to describe Christians.

Dr. Lytle is a business professor, so he comes at this topic from a distinctly business paradigm. But make no mistake: this is not a dry academic treatise. Abandon The Ordinary is an exciting and practical way to develop a distinct, unique brand for your life. In the opening chapter, Dr. Lytle quotes -

"To make ordinary that which God calls life and use your gifts and capacities for nothing is to prostitute great potential. Jesus Christ came into the world to convict us not so much of our transgressions but of our possibilities and to deliver us from an empty way of life. ...God must become ill at times when He sees us so trivial, so paltry, thinking such little things, when such great and honorable and glorious things are there in front of us." - Jim McGuiggan

Many Errors

I just finished doing a timing belt job along with the water pump and this manual is absolutely terrible. Their instructions to get to the timing belt are just flat out wrong. They skip removing the plate that goes over the outer timing belt cover and connects into the mount and they never provide the torque values for the three bolts that hold it on. They also tell you to remove the engine mount and the mount bracket. Doing that is a waste of time since you still can't get the mount out and all you really need to do is jack the engine up a lot. There are many other repairs that they just skip details on or just have the flat out wrong info. Another example would be they tell you one year battery tray is held on by 4 bolts instead of 5....wrong! My 2000 had the fifth bolt that was kind of hidden so I bent the battery tray at first (not that big a deal but the point is I paid for correct info). The procedure they give you to balance the engine on the mounts with the torque struts is also wrong. Their instruction were physically impossible on my car. The measurement they gave must be wrong.

To sum it up, don't rely on this book for any repair. It might give you some ideas about how to fix stuff but you may end up in the middle of a repair totally confused and very mad!

Can't have a car without having a Chilton's to go with it!

Love the book. Easy to follow directions on car repair that has saved me a huge amount of money on routine car maintenance such as tune-ups as well as more major repair jobs such as muffler replacement and motor-mount repair.
